| erin5oaks's Full Review: Battleship |
We have an old Battleship game which came out of of the closet during this latest heat wave. Two Junior High girls played it for several days straight having a running competition so see who could win ten games first.
This game consists of two boards that sort of look like laptops. Each of the game boards has two grids. On the bottom grid each player places their ships. The upper grid is to plot the shots you have made at your opponents ships. There are wells on the side of the bottom grid in which you put your pegs. The pegs come in two colors red and white. The white pegs are for misses and red is for hits.
The ships which come in different sizes which take varying amount of hits to sink( patrol 2 hits, carrier 5 hits, submarine 3 hits, destroyer 3 hits, battleship 4 hits) At the beginning of the game each player places their ships on their bottom grid. Everyone has their own way of doing this. I know people who just place the ships randomly. I have a friend who only puts his ships on the edges. My brother places all of his ships in one clump. You don't want to be predictable. The goal is to sink your opponents ships first.
The coordinates are letters A to L and the numbers 1 to 12. Each player takes turns calling out coordinates. Their opponent responds either HIT or MISS. You will then put the peg in the corresponding hole.
You also have to be careful that your opponent doesn't see your board. There are people who will cheat and look to see where your ships are placed. We like to sit on different couches when playing.
There are no batteries required to play this game. This is a big plus. I was really surprised in this day of video games how this simple no battery game kept the attention of the kids at my house this summer.
You need some level of fine motor control to play this game. The pegs are small and they need to be placed in small holes on the game board. The recommendation for the game is seven years old, you should be the judge of whether your children has the skill level to work with these pegs.
Only two players can play at a time. If you have more than two children at your house you can have the third child play the winner of the first game. This has helped with the fighting at my house.
If you have small children at your house you will have to be careful because the pegs are very small and can be swallowed. We always check after playing the game to make sure each peg has been picked up. They are very easy to be misplaced.
This is a classic game. If you are starting your game collection or just want a few games in your home this is a must. What a value this is for $10.
