Lets face it - you cant look cool on the ice when the fabric on your skate toes is all torn up. Frankly, I think that worn out toe cap fabric is more fitting for lilAbner than anyone on the ice. Bauer Protec Toe, more often simply referred to as Pro Toe, can save the day!
▪ What is Protec Toe?
Pro Toe is a paint-like product that can be applied directly to the fabric covering on most skate toes. It prevents ripping and cutting from other skaters stepping on your toes. Simply apply Pro Toe to the cover on your skates and it dries to a hard, shiny, cut resistant black shell.
Pro Toe comes in a can with a brush attached to the lid, much like many plumbing products. The can contains enough Pro Toe to give numerous applications. You could do several pair of skates easily with one can and still have plenty left for touch ups.
▪ Does it work?
You bet it works. The hard shell will protect skates from cuts for a long time. If it does get damaged, you can easily touch up that area. Pro Toe will hold things in place until you can fix a small blemish.
Pro Toe does have its limits however. If you dont apply it to your skates when they are still undamaged, you cannot repair a torn toe covering with Pro Toe. Once your toe cover is ripped, youre out of luck.
▪ Final Thoughts
Admit it, part of buying a skate is the cosmetic appearance. If you found the lightest, most comfortable skate on the market and it only came in hot pink, you would keep looking. We might make light of the 10-year-old kids who would rather have a painful pair of skates that have a flashy finish, than the pair that fits, but to some level we are all a little vain. Having your toes torn up on your skates might not be as bad as hot pink, but it is still an unsightly mar on our choice.
Toe covering is one of the first places that a skate gets worn out. It is also one of the most noticeable. Even though torn toe fabric is purely cosmetic, it is ugly! While many skates have gone to a pure plastic toe and dont require this product, I highly recommend that all skates with fabric-covered toes be coated with Pro Toe. It is a pretty inexpensive way to protect your investment.
