I have worn contacts since I was sixteen years old (egad - about 28 years). During that time I have progressed from the hard lenses (ouch) to the thirty day extended wears to my current lenses, two week extended wears. During the vast majority of that time I have had little to no problem with my eyes; a few eye infections here and there, but nothing major.
Over the past six months, however, it seems I am having constant problems. Every time I turn around my eyes are burning and turning red. Maybe it is just that I am getting older; not sure. But I do know that it was starting to cause me extreme difficulty.
A couple of months ago my eyes got sore and inflamed yet again. It was of course on a weekend so I couldn't get in to see the eye doctor. I sent to the internet and researched eye infections and ways to treat them. One of the sites I went to referenced the use of boric acid. Now, to be honest I didn't like the idea of putting anything containing any kind of acid in my eyes, but I was desperate. We headed to the store to find some boric acid.
I went up and down the aisles about ten times but could not find any boric acid. So instead, I headed to the eye care area. A product I had never seen before caught my eye; Bausch & Lomb Soothing Eye Wash.
Hmmm. The package said "Eye Irrigating Solution For Daily or Emergency Eye Cleansing." I picked it up to check out the ingredients and was surprised to find boric acid listed. Score! It seemed kind of expensive; I paid right around $5.00 for a four ounce bottle, but my eyes needed some relief.
As soon as I got home I took out my contacts and squirted a few drops into each eye. There was a slight stinging sensation, but nothing major. In just a few minutes my eyes stopped burning. I was amazed! It did not clear up the redness instantly, but having the pain gone improved my mood remarkably. Since then I use this product almost every day, whether my eyes are bothering me or not. It has helped quite a bit in reducing the amount of eye irritation I have been experiencing.
Directions for Use
There are two ways to use this product; it comes with an eye cup and can be used as an actual eye wash. Or, you can squirt the solution directly into the eyes. I tried both methods but found that I preferred putting the solution directly into my eyes.
If you use the eye cup, you are supposed to rinse the eye cup with the Eye Washsolution before using it. You then fill the eye cup half full, apply it lightly to the eye, and tip your head backward. The next step is to open your eyes and kind of rotate them around so that the Eye Wash can do its thing.
Ingredients
From the bottle: "A sterile, buffered, isotonic aqueous solution that contains purified water, boric acid, sodium borate and sodium chloride, preserved with sorbic acid and edetate disodium."
Final Thoughts
This product has helped me immensely with my eye irritation. As I said above, I use it on a regular and frequent basis. I wear my contacts as extended wear, meaning that I leave them in at night most of the time. When I do take them out at night, though, I always make sure to use my Bausch & Lomb Soothing Eye Wash. Otherwise, I take my contacts out, use the solution, and put my contacts back in.
I have never experienced any eye irritation from the use of this product. It is definitely soothing and has been a life saver for me.
You don't have to be a contact lens wearer to benefit from this product; my husband and daughters also use it when they experience eye irritation and have been very happy with the results. I can't imagine not having it in my medicine cabinet.
I purchased my bottle from my local grocery store. It is also available on line from various vendors.
