hamburgerman's Full Review: Savage Skies for PlayStation 2
I recently picked up a copy of SAVAGE SKIES by Bam! Entertainment at a Gamestop for only $8.99. I'll buy almost any game that's priced under $10 (except sports games.)
I don't expect much when I pay so little. In fact, I waited about a week before I even tried the game. But once I put it in my Playstation 2, I was pleasantly surprised. While it's not a fantastic game, it was certainly worth the low price and has occupied a few hours of my time already.
It's set up is similar to that of SPY HUNTER. Each mission has a primary objective which must be completed to advance, and a secondary objective that does not have to be completed. Many levels also have secret objectives as well, which you must discover on your own.
You control a variety of flying creatures around a 3D terrain, a different creature on each mission. Each creature has it's own special abilities and firing methods. One thing I don't like about the game is that it assigns you the creature, you can't choose which one you want to fly during a given mission.
The graphics are decent. Having grown up on the Atari 2600, I'm not really one to criticize video game graphics. But given what developers are doing in recent months with the likes of TONY HAWK 4 and VICE CITY, many gamers might be disappointed in the graphics. But also keep in mind I only paid $8.99 for SAVAGE SKIES.
My biggest gripe with the game are the sound effects. They are very weak. Often there will be so much activity on the screen that the sounds effects for many explosions are bonus items collected are simply not there.
The developers chose to use a rock sound track to accompany this medieval themed game. It almost works, but the tracks aren't fast or loud enough.
SAVAGE SKIES has turned out to be a relatively pleasant surprise. But if I had spent $49.99 for it, I would be incredibly disappointed.
