| mommyauri's Full Review: Bayer Advantage |
I worked in a store that sold this product. I listened to customers talk about it. I learned from people who knew a lot about flea control, like vets, breeders, etc. No doubt about it Advantage was always the rave of the conversation.
I recommended Advantage first off for people coming to me with flea problems. Budget came into consideration, but most people found the product to be worth the extra and often bought without hesitation.
I soon took my knowledge home where we had a cat that was plagued with fleas, and rabbits with a similar problem. (We had tried others with little success)
Many flea medications available for dogs and cats are NOT safe for rabbits. However I have heard from many different sources that the small cat Advantage is safe for rabbits.
Please check with a vet before ever administering Advantage to any animal that isn't indicated on the package directions.
I bought some and took it home and treated both animals. The improvement was very drastic and nearly immediate. The fleas have been gone and since we've moved we have not needed to repeat treatment. No side affects of any kind were noticed in either animal.
What I do like about Advantage:
It is safe for nearly all ages and weights of cats. Of course you should strictly follow the directions, Advantage is much safer to use on animals that are weaker or smaller than your typical cats. This typically comes into play with older or very young animals. Many other brands use chemicals that can be toxic and may produce side affects such as drooling. They are also (arguably) much less safe for animals with weaker or compromised immune systems.
I have NEVER (with one exception) heard of any adverse affects caused by Advantage. I have also never heard any complaints (except for the same person) about Advantage. It came recommended by every vet and vet tech I've ever spoken with for my rabbits or cats.
Treatment is very easy. Advantage is applied to the back of the neck between the shoulder blades. This is the best spot for it as animals can not lick it. Improvement should be noticeable in days. Treatment is to be repeated once a month. In areas where fleas are a common problem, and for outdoor pets I recommend staying on this treatment plan even without any noticeable fleas. Indoor pets may get away with not needed any after fleas are gone. In the event of furniture, carpet, or a house infested with fleas you may need to spray or "bomb" the house.
Advantage comes in 3 dose packs or 6 dose packs. That is respectably 1 dose per month per animal.
Negatives about Advantage:
Advantage costs more than any other flea control product I've encountered. It's close second is Frontline (which is also a very effective remedy, but not recommended to me for rabbits). It does NOT protect against ticks. Frontline does. In some areas it is difficult to acquire except from a vet. Where I lived and worked it was readily available in stores (usually in locked cabinets) for about $30.00 and went on sale now and again.
I recommend Advantage over Control, over BioSpot, over all those "cheap" brands as I firmly believe it is safer and more effective for your animal. If, in some instance, tick control is needed I would recommend Frontline instead.
