| elderberries's Full Review: Bayer Advantage |
Okay, here’s the picture: a couple years ago, I was living in a bottom-floor apartment with my husband, our 4 indoor cats, and a couple thousand free-loading, no rent-paying fleas. I hated it.
A girl living in my apartment complex who worked as a vet’s assistant told me about Advantage. I’d seen the TV ads for it, but never dreamed it could work as well as it claimed to. I’d already tried the flea collars that left the foul-smelling white residue on your hands (not to mention they really ticked off the cats), and the flea foam, which scared the bejesus out of the cats with their loud “fwoosh”... and also didn’t work. I’d of course tried flea shampoos, but only once or twice, since that meant opening ourselves up to the wild shredding action of claws belonging to our wet and extremely ticked off cats.
For those who haven’t heard of Advantage, here’s how it works: It’s a tiny tube of liquid that you apply to the animal by pulling back the hair in one spot and squeezing it quickly onto the skin. It’s such a small amount that it can be done in a second or two, before the cat has a chance to squirm or scratch. It’s meant to be reapplied once a month for continual protection, and it cost about $8 per application, per animal (this was a couple years ago – the price may have gone down since then). According to the instructions, it’s supposed to have killed off all adult fleas within 24 hours, and all the eggs within a day or two. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? That’s what I thought.
I put it off awhile since it sounded expensive (remember there were 4 cats), but finally got so tired of the fleas I decided to try it. We bought a 4-pack and applied one to each cat. It was just as easy as it was said to be. Then we vacuumed the carpets, thinking that killing off the cats’ fleas would do no good if we just let them hide out in the carpet.
Within 1 day, the cats were no longer scratching. I couldn’t believe it. I went looking for fleas on the cats (one of our cats has light hair, and we could often see the fleas on his skin) and found none. Weeks went by... no fleas! Being the frugal (or lazy, call it what you will) person I am, I decided to wait and see if we got fleas again before buying it again and applying it the next month. Believe it or not, I never had to buy it again! Now this may vary depending on the environment and the animal, but for me, one dose worked wonders and I haven’t had a flea problem since.
I’m not the kind of person to go writing to companies about their products unless I’m really upset about something, but I couldn’t help myself. I wrote to the address on the box just to tell them what an incredible product they had and how refreshing it was to finally discover something that does exactly what it claims, and does it well.
