Pros:Easy to take, taste isn't too bad
Cons:Too much sodium, didn't care for ingredients to support immune system
The Bottom Line: This product was a disappointment, didn't live up to expectations.
When my husband or I come down with a winter seasonal cold, one of our favorite remedies is a cold relief product made by Alka Seltzer. A few months ago while shopping in a discount aisle at Walmart, my husband picked up a few boxes of Alka-Seltzer Plus Immunity Complex, and it was marked down to a low price of $2.50 (I do not know what the normal retail price was).
Recommend this product?
My husband liked the idea of this product (and Alka-Seltzer products in general), so much that he went back to the store a few days later to buy more, but they were all sold out, and I have not been able to find it in any of my local grocery stores or drug stores.
What Is It?
Alka-Seltzer Plus Immunity Complex comes in a small orange colored box, containing ten effervescent tablets. Much like the "plop plop fizz fizz" types of Alka-Seltzer, except these are flavored "Orange Zest".
The box explains that this consists of a "blend of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that delivers immunity and energy support". It says the flavor is "refreshing orange", and that it contains both natural and artificial flavors.
In short, Alka-Seltzer Plus Immunity Complex is a vitamin mineral supplement, and is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare in Morristown New Jersey.
How To Take It
Simply dissolve one of the orange and white colored effervescent tablets in a glass of water, and take the beverage with food.
Children ages 9-13 can take one tablet per day, but adults are allowed to take one tablet up to two times each day.
What Does It Contain?
As I said, this is a vitamin mineral supplement, and as such it reads similar to the packaging on a container of vitamins. Here is what the box tells us:
* Calories: 5
* Total carbs: 2g
* Vitamin A: 2140 IU
* Vitamin C: 1000 mg
* Vitamin D: 350 IU
* Vitamin E: 45 IU
* Vitamin B6: 6.5 mg
* Folic Acid: 400 mcg
* Vitamin B12: 9.6 mcg
* Iron: 4.5 mg
* Zinc: 9.0 mg
* Selenium: 94 mcg
* Copper: 0.8 mg
* Sodium: 313 mg
Alka-Seltzer Plus Immunity Complex dissolves quickly in water, and produces a fizzy drink, much like other similar products made my Alka-Seltzer. My husband liked the orange flavor more than I did, it was palatable but not really good tasting, in my opinion.
I honestly can't see what this product contains, other than the high dose of vitamin C, that helps with immunity. I take a product called Wellness Formula, and it contains ingredients such as astragulus and echinacea, which are proven to help the immune system. This Alka-Seltzer product doesn't have anything even similar added to the ingredients.
The fact that it is high in vitamin C is good, and I like that it contains 88% of the USDA amount of vitamin D, which is important for bone health (especially for women), but when I look at the high sodium content, that (in my mind) cancels out the beneficial bone building benefits of the vitamin D. Too much sodium in the diet will actually leach calcium from the bones!! Too much sodium isn't good for anyone, and this alone would make me give this product two thumbs down.
As far as the claim that it gives "energy support", well we didn't find that to be true. My husband is always tired, and Alka-Seltzer Plus Immunity Complex didn't do a thing to improve on his energy levels. I found no such benefit to my body either. I get more out of my vitamin B complex than I did with Alka-Seltzer Plus Immunity Complex.
I don't like swallowing pills, and I have not yet found a good chewable multiple vitamin for adults, although they do make liquid vitamins that aren't bad. I honestly can't recommend this product as a multiplevitamin and mineral supplement. If I wanted a liquid vitamin, I would buy a specific product from a health food store, rather than take this product. I became sick a couple weeks after we starting taking Alka-Seltzer Plus Immunity Complex, so I can't say it really helped my immune system at all.
As I stated, this was sold in a marked down bin, and had an expiration date of November 2009. I don't know if Walmart was getting rid of them because the packages were going to be expiring soon, or if it has been discontinued, but I have not been able to find it since.
