Pros: kills all types of worms, requires just one dose
Cons: expensive, can be difficult to find
We run a cat rescue so there are always new cats and kittens coming in. Some of them come from the shelter, others were simply neglected by their former owners, and the rest are picked up as strays with no known medical history. As a general rule I assume that they all have worms and treat them with Drontal Cat as soon as they get here.
About Drontal Cat
This product is a broad-spectrum dewormer that kills roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. It comes in round yellow tablets that have been scored to allow you to cut them into halves and quarters. Each tablet contains 18.2mg praziquantel (the ingredient that kills tapeworms) and 72.6mg pyrantel (kills roundworms and hookworms).
Exactly how much Drontal Cat you have to administer depends on the animal's weight. Kittens will receive 1/4 or 1/2 of a tablet while adult cats will get 1, 1 and 1/2, or 2 tablets. The bottle has a chart to help you determine the correct dosage for each animal. You can give the tablets to the cat directly into their mouth or hidden in food.
This dewormer should not be used in kittens younger than one month or weighing less than 1.5 pounds.
My Experience With This Dewormer
This product does an excellent job of killing worms in cats. You only need one dose for effective treatment and it's usually tolerated well by cats. If a cat or kitten is still having constant diarrhea after being dewormed with Drontal Cat, then I know it's not a worm issue and I move on to treating other types of parasites like coccidia and giardia.
The most difficult part of using this product is getting the tablets into the cat's mouth. It must not taste very good because they will fight me tooth and nail every step of the way. They spit them out and start drooling or foaming at the mouth if they bite into them. It's not pretty. Kittens take the tablets well but I have to use a pill dispenser and a very firm grip in order to get them into adult cats. The worst ones are my own three cats. I give them Drontal Cat every couple of months because they use the same litter boxes as the foster cats. When they see the pill dispenser, they know exactly what is coming and turn into these wild, nasty creatures that want nothing more than to draw blood from me. Sometimes I win and sometimes they do.
Cost and Availability
I pay something like $150 per 50-tablet bottle of Drontal Cat. It is much more expensive than anything you'd find in a pet shop but it also contains ingredients that cheaper products don't have. This is the same tablet that your veterinarian would give a cat to deworm them.
This product is available online at many different sites. I usually order mine from RevivalAnimal.com. Of course, you also can get Drontal Cat tablets from your vet during an office visit.
At about $3 per tablet, Drontal Cat isn't cheap but it is an excellent broad-spectrum dewormer that gets the job done in just one dose. Every cat that comes through here gets a dose or two (depending on how long they stay here) so I know that I am sending them to their new homes without any kind of worms. I wholeheartedly recommend this product and give it 5 stars.
