| dneblank's Full Review: Bazooka EL1208 Car Speaker |
My 8" MTX 6000 subwoofer was stolen from my car and I needed to replace it. MTX is well known for their quality speakers and this speaker sounded great. However, it was expensive and I did not want to spend too much money to get a new subwoofer. I bought the Bazooka EL1208 from Returnbuy.
Brand new, the EL1208 runs around $100, give or take $20. Since mine was a refurbished speaker, bought through Ebay, it was considerably less ($35 including shipping.)
The speaker comes with a set of instructions included.
Since you cannot just hook a subwoofer to an amplifier, I had to buy a cabinet for it, which I bought from a small company that makes set size boxes, not specific to any speaker. I mention this because the instruction booklet included in the package for the speaker gives you specs to built a proper cabinet for the speaker. Dimensions are given for both ported and sealed cabinets. I found the instructions deficient here because the specs give you the size of the box needed for the speaker, but it INCLUDES the displacement from the speaker in the box. In other words, they recommend that a sealed box have .93 square feet of interior space. That is after the speaker is in the box. However they do not give you the displacement from the speaker, or how much space the speaker will take up. All this is very important to creating a box to make the speaker sound best. If the box is too big or small, the speaker will not work to it's potential.
This is where Bazooka's customer service comes in. The instructions include a toll free number for technical support. I called and was connected to one of their specialists. He was very friendly and helpful and was able to assist me quickly. Since I bought a pre-made box, and it was too big for the speaker, he was able to tell me how much I had to add to the inside of the box to take up enough space to make the box the proper size.
I put the box in the trunk and hooked it up to my 200 watt Jensen amp. It is a cheap floor model I bought a few years ago that powered my 8 inch speaker pretty well. The Bazooka sounds phenomenal. It produces a very clean and rich bass response. I have the box in the truck facing the rear. Normally, a ported box is better sounding, but since my trunk is small, I could not fit the 2 square foot box needed for it. Even with the sealed box, about 1 square foot, the speaker sounds great. It would probably be even better in the ported enclosure. I'n not trying to annoy the neighbors and don't really listen to rap, but even with the small amp, I can make quite a racket.
Bazooka offers a system, with their amplifiers and speakers, that will keep the speaker and amplifier cooled so both can handle more power. They call it the CHIL system. I did not opt to get it, so I don't know how well it works.
RMS Power Handling: 200/300(w/CHIL)
Max Power Handling: 300/450(w/CHIL)
The EL1208 is an 8 ohm speaker. They also make the EL1204, which is 4 ohms.
