| sshelle's Full Review: Bear in the Big Blue House Plush |
My daughter doesn't watch much TV, so we don't even know what "Bear in the Big Blue House" is about, but we got this from a relative for Christmas, and we think it's cute. In the "standing" position it's 18" tall, in the normal "sitting" position it's 14" tall. It's about 14" wide from hand to hand in the normal "sitting" position. It's very soft and easy to squeeze, like a Gund stuffed animal, not stuffed hard like a cheap stuffed animal that you get at a county fair, or filled with beans like some stuffed animals.
It has several different textures to feel, so it would be great for infants. The brown areas (most of it's body) are fake fur (long, small orangutan looking clumps). It's paws are short clipped brown fur, like you find on teddy bears. On it's bottom ("feet") paws, there are embroidered blue paw prints. His chest is fine, long yellow fake fur. His face is very short yellow fur, with his mouth open to show a pink felt tongue (sewn in and sewn down in the middle, and it's two layers thick with the seams on the inside, so it's high quality and it's not coming out) against a dark brown 'deep-felt' like material. There are some short brown yarn pieces that match his fur around his eyes (made to look like eyebrows, I suppose). His eyes are black oval beads, and seem to be sewn in very well. His nose is a big blue piece of stuffed leather that is attached very well to the end of his long nose. So you can see that this toy offers quite a lot of textures if you take a good look at it! It has just a few colors -- pink, yellow, blue, light and dark brown, but many textures. So it has more to offer than what first meets the eye.
It's most attractive features are it's friendly expression and long arms, suitable for a hug, plus it's squeezable softness (not that I'm comparing it to a certain bathroom product here!). My daughter, who is 2.5 years old, enjoys this bear for what it is to her (just another bear, since she doesn't know that it's Bear in the Big Blue House), and likes to play with it. In fact, she just now saw me with it and came over and took it away.
We just got a potty training video featuring Bear in the Big Blue House, so now it will be interesting to see how she responds to this toy once she discovers who he 'really' is.
I wouldn't hesitate to offer this to an older infant, as everything seems to be sewn on well. The only parts to worry about are the oval eye beads, but they are in little eye cavities that would take some work just to access, much less dig them out of and detach from whatever is keeping them in there. The only reason I wouldn't give it to a younger infant is that it is very soft, and I can see a possibility of suffocation if the infant fell asleep on it. But for a toddler or a younger child, this is a really fun toy.
