| alanbweaver's Full Review: Becco |
I’ve eaten at Becco quite a few times over the past four years and have consistently been pleased with it. I’ve eaten there alone (after work sometimes) and with friends. The caveats (if you’re new to NYC, these are facts about many restaurants in NYC):
It is always crowded. However, you can make a reservation so you can be seated with minimal inconvenience.
It is a New York City restaurant which means tables are very close to each other, lots of people which mean there will be a high decibel level. However, it is not overly loud so you can have a conversation with your dining companions. Service can be a bit rushed but I’ve never found it to be rude or ignoring of me. Yes, you may have to wait a bit of time to get your food, but if you are going to a play (and tell the waiter when you arrive), you’ll get out on time. If you don’t have a reservation and show up around 5pm, you should NOT have a problem getting seated and the place will be a bit less crowded. I've never been there during "show time" (i.e. after 7:45, but I'm sure it's quieter at that time. If you're seeing a show, probably 8pm is a good time for dinner)
The good:
The food is very good to excellent. They have an “unlimited” pasta offering where you get 3 different types that will be put on your plate as many times as you wish. I’ve never had a bad pasta dish. They constantly change. If you don’t like certain types of pasta, they will substitute. For example, I don’t care for seafood and one of them was a lobster pasta dish which I passed on. The waiter heard me saying this and came over with a very pleasant alternate. Once I had a steak which was also good. However, the pasta which is about $24-$25 including salad and some very nice bread and olives is an excellent deal. For those of you watching carbs, there are other entrees to choose from which are reasonably priced. Wines – there are many nice choices for $25 a bottle which is a steal. However, if you are ordering by the glass, it is a bit expensive, about $10 per glass.
If you are eating alone, you may wish to eat at the bar. The bartender is always friendly and will often offer you a taste of a wine they are promoting which I appreciated. The bartenders on this side are usually not rushed, they do the wine and take care of customers at their small bar which seats about a dozen people. The people sitting next to you are often friendly and you can strike up a nice conversation with your companions.
Desserts – as I’m often full after dinner, I usually don’t have it. A couple of times I’ve had their desserts. One was a granita which was fairly good. I’ve had better but still enjoyed it on a hot summer evening. Desserts are not inexpensive, they can run about $8-$10.
Coffee/espresso - I always have one or the other after a good dinner. It's good, also a bit pricy compared to what you get at Starbucks. (however, it is nice to linger over a nice cup of coffee and have never been rushed by the waiter)
