Perhaps I am out of the loop when it comes to breakthrough music, and odds are that being an American, I am. So, it was with surprise that I took this unheralded album home with me and proceeded to be amazed. This album grows and morphs with every spin, as different songs acquire more complex properties in themselves and in relation to each other.
What delighted me above all was that the more popular songs that received a limited amount of airplay or clubplay such as "Don't Give Up" and "Saltwater" turned out to be lesser songs than such standouts as "No Ordinary Morning" and "Autumn Tactics."
Perhaps the greatest bit of chicanery was the progression of "Halcyon" from a purposefully mundane dance beat into a hammeringly fantastic dance beat with a tinge of melancholy. That we could be lulled into skipping over the song because of impatience was shown to those who took the time to lie back and wait. And indeed, the rewards are endless.
