| JohnLin's Full Review: Beltronics BEL 946 Radar Detector |
I bought this product because of its cordless capabilities and the functions it offered: VG-2, multiple bandwidths as well as laser, 4 different signal strength indicators, etc... As said in other opinions, installation is simple. I agree, but familiarizing yourself with all the eclectic sounds to warn you about something becomes rather tedious and annoying. Also, the largest problem with my particular radar detector was the fact that it barely picked up on any radar signals. Let me explain.
There is this machine which the local police put on roads to warn speeding drivers by displaying their current speed underneath the posted speed limit. That day I happened to pass by this machine. The road was a wide 2-lane street mostly straight except for a slight bend. Equipped with my "state of the art" radar detector, I thought I would be ready for anything. The posted speed limit was 45 miles per hour. Coming around the bend driving the speed limit, I was given approximately a two seconds of lead time before I actually saw the machine itself which was about 50 yards away. From the time the radar detector first chirped to the time I was driving right next to the machine, the signal strength indicator only read "1" (reading on a scale from 1-4) meanwhile I drove at different speeds watching the machine post my speed instantaneous on its display (I did this to make sure the display was reading my speed and not anything else). Finally while I'm passing the machine, the radar detector indicated a level 2-signal strength. About several yards past the machine, my detector continued to read "2", then slowly to "1", and finally nothing. Convinced that my $200 radar detector was not a piece of junk, I tried it again, and again a total of three times. My results were the identical to the first.
Needless to say I was fairly upset and returned my radar detector the next day. I would've returned it that same day, but I had to return home to get the box and receipt, and by the time I returned with everything, the store would have been closed.
Bottom line: if you are interested in buying an easy to install radar detector this model is perfect. However if you are interested in buying a radar detector that works, I heard the Valentine One works pretty well.
