Pros: Small enough to pack in a computer bag or piece of luggage
Cons: Limited number of outlets and ports; but they can supplement those found in hotels.
The Belkin BZ103050-TVL Mini Surge Suppressor can protect your electronic equipment at home or on the road.
I have a desktop computer in a permanent position in my home and plugged into a good electronics surge suppressor. When I purchased my laptop last year, I bought several accessories; and one of them was the Belkin BZ103050-TVL Mini Surge Suppressor. I wasn’t quite sure where I would be using it; but I wanted to make sure that I always had surge suppressor protection wherever I went, even if it was just to my recliner in the living room.
We have very few power strips in our home, which are just an extension of an outlet. They will not give you any protection against surges and spikes in electrical current due to storms or power surges. Almost all of our strips are surge suppressors, varying in Joules protection according to the type of equipment plugged into the outlets. When purchasing a surge suppressor strip for your home, information is usually provided on the box which will give you the number of Joules of protection and the type of equipment suitable for that number of Joules. The number of Joules used to protect your cell phone is not the same number of Joules of protection that you will need for your home entertainment system or any other sophisticated piece of electronics equipment...and you paid too much for that equipment to get it fried by one thunderstorm.
When I was working, I worked with the Fire Chief when he would come and inspect our electrical outlets. He was always very impressed that all our electronic equipment was plugged into surge suppressors. He said that they could help prevent a fire.
The Belkin Mini Surge Suppressor measures approximately 8.5” x 3.6” x 5” and weighs .8 pounds. There are 3 AC three-prong outlets and 2 USB charging ports for your electronic equipment items such as MP3's, PDA’s and mobile phones. Please note that the USB ports are for charging only and cannot transmit data or be used as a hub. A mini-USB power cable, which is compatible with Motorola, Blackberry and Razr phones, is also included.
The unit can sit vertically or horizontally using the 360-degree rotating plug which can be locked into one of four positions. There is a green light which indicates that the surge suppressor is on and functioning.
This unit comes with 918 Joules of surge protection. If you understand electrical terminology, a Joule is a unit of electrical energy equal to the work done when a current of one ampere passes through a resistance of one ohm for one second. Output Voltage is 5 V DC; Current is 36 kA Surge Current and the Surge Energy Rating is 918J (Joules).
A $75,000 Connected Equipment Warranty and Belkin Product Lifetime Warranty is also included. Please be sure to read all Warranty Information, Instructions and the User Guide thoroughly before using the unit for the first time.
While the number of USB outlets may be limited, this unit is meant to fit conveniently into your computer bag or luggage. This unit will supplement any outlets and charging stations that you may find in your hotel room.
While I’ve only used my Belkin Mini Surge Suppressor at home, it’s given me months of reliable service.
If space is at a premium, this unit might be just the solution that you've been looking for.
