| scmrak's Full Review: Bell's Kalamazoo Stout |
There is a distinct disadvantage, sometimes, to living in the state that has the strangest liquor laws in the US. I mean Texas, for you uninitiated. One of the worst, by the way, is the paucity of good heavy beers -- stouts, especially. Oh, we can get the most trendy imports (Gin-yes, or some such thing) but it's tough to get good microbrews from around the states. That's why, when I travel, it's a bittersweet thing to taste the local brews: sweet, 'cause some are so FINE! and bitter, 'cause you just can't get them in Texas.
A case in point is Deschutes Obsidian Stout: bitter AND sweet, just as a stout should be. I'm a geologist, so the rock in the name was what first caught my attention. And, I'm glad it did. DOS has those smoky tones that so finely mesh with the hearty fish dishes of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, like smoked salmon. It's strong enough to hold its own with meaty or other heavy dishes, yet it's smooth enough to sip on its own. It doesn't go so well with pizza and popcorn, but who'd expect it to? The clean finish leaves you ready for the next bottle.
So if you live somewhere where you can get your hands on a six of DOS, I'd heartily recommend it. I've seen the beer in Denver and Alaska, so it's fairly widely distributed.
Enjoy!
