| luvmysoldier's Full Review: Bellies and Buns Fitted Cloth Diapers |
I am semi-new to the world of cloth diapering. I became interested in switching my son to cloth diapers because some friends of mine who use cloth were constantly raving about the wonders of CD-ing. I did a little research and discovered that using cloth has many benefits, some of which include less diaper rash, softer skin, and most importantly, no harsh chemicals next to baby's sensitive skin.
I started reading some diaper reviews at various websites. A friend recommended Bellies and Buns fitted diapers. I paid a visit to the website (http://www.belliesandbuns.com) and was in awe at what I saw! I didn't know that cloth diapers could be so cute. I thought cloth entailed white squares of cloth and pins, with rubber pants to go over top to prevent leaks. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that Bellies and Buns offers a large variety of products.
I decided I would be most interested in purchasing some fitted diapers (no folding and pinning on my wiggly monkey boy!). Fitted diapers look just like disposables, except they are made of cloth and are secured with aplix or velcro instead of sticky tape. There is usually some elastic in the legs to contain messes. Bellies and Buns fitted diapers are turned and topstitched, so there are no rough edges to irritate baby's tender skin. The soaker is made of recycled prefold diapers and the inside of the diaper is lined with flannel. The outside of the diaper is made of flannel also, but you can choose whatever print you would like.
There are so many fabric prints to choose from! Everything from animals to construction vehicles to Teletubbies. I was in heaven. I loved the fact that there were so many options to choose from.
I decided to order one fitted diaper to try out. I went with a size medium airplane print diaper. I emailed Karen (the owner of Bellies and Buns) and she replied to my email within twelve hours. She gave me my total price and I paid promptly by Paypal. She told me it would be about two weeks until my diaper was finished.
Two weeks passed, and sure enough, my diaper arrived! I opened the package and was very excited to see the beautiful diaper inside! Karen also made a fleece topped doubler with fabric that matched my diaper. I immediately changed my son into his new diaper.
The Bellies and Buns diaper fit my son very well. They are extremely trim fitting, which is nice, because I don't have to worry about finding clothes to fit over a huge cloth diapered bum. I would classify the fit as a bikini style. The diapers don't come up very high on my son's waist, the top comes to about two inches below his belly button, which I like. The only thing I don't like about the appearance of the diaper is that the aplix on the front is not covered with fabric. In my opinion this takes away from the overall appearance of the diaper (but it's still a gorgeous diaper!).
Now for absorbency. The Bellies and Buns diaper was not very absorbent. My son is a very heavy wetter, so that might have something to do with it. He wore the diaper for about a half hour before it was soaked through the front. Not a big deal, because I change him quite often, but it would have been nice if the diaper could hold a little bit more before becoming drenched.
Moving onto drying time. I usually set my dryer for 120 minutes when I do diaper laundry. This is to make sure all the diapers have ample time to become fully dried. I am happy to report that the Bellies and Buns diaper only took about 90 minutes to dry completely. Which is better than many other WAHM diapers I have tried!
I have been using the Bellies and Buns fitted diaper on my son for about a month and a half now. It has held up very well. The flannel on the inside of the diaper has gotten pilly, but that is to be expected with normal use. The flannel on the outside of the diaper has also pilled somewhat but not badly at all. The diaper is still in excellent condition and I will definitely buy more Bellies and Buns diapers in the future.
