| Buck78's Full Review: Bellies and Buns Fitted Cloth Diapers |
Yes, I was a cloth diaper addict. It's sad, but true. One afternoon, at the tail-end of a particularly bad diaper buying binge, I came across a website with a cute name and an adorable line of diapers...Bellies and Buns, run by a woman named Karen. Seeing that she was open for orders, I decided to give her diapers (and her customer service) a trial run. Here is my experience:
Features of the Bellies and Buns diaper
Karen currently offers 2 lines of diapers on her website: her original diaper, the aplix diaper (which I have no personal experience with, but is reviewed in great detail above), and her newer side snap knit diaper (which I will be focusing on in this review). The knit diaper features:
**2 layers of 10.5 oz Hemp 55%/Cotton 45% fleece in the body of the diaper. If you are familiar with the benefits of hemp, you know that it is more absorbent than many other similar materials, is much more durable through numerous washings and dryings, and is also resistant to mildew.
**3 more layers of the same fleece in the soaker area.
**The customer's choice of twelve different colors of serging. Since the hemp is a natural color, the customer can use the serging as a way of adding color.
**Long lasting rubber-strip elastic in the leg and waist area.
**4 waist and 4 thigh snaps on each side. This feature provides a tremendous level of adjustability, making this a good diaper for skinny and chubby babies alike.
**2 different sizes, both with very large weight ranges, making it possible to diaper siblings with only one size.
Medium will fit babies weighing 15-28 lbs
Large will fit babies weighing 25-40 lbs
**Optional fleece-topped doubler to boost absorbency, available with prefold material or all hemp construction.
Customer Service
I have worked with many WAHMs during my diaper-addicted lifetime. And for the most part, my experiences have been enjoyable. But I have yet to work with a WAHM better than Karen of Bellies and Buns. She responded to my emails in good time, answered my (numerous) questions cheerfully and thoroughly, and was willing to accommodate an unusual request that I made of her. My diapers arrived within an *extremely* reasonable amount of time.
The Grade
There are several key elements that I look at when evaluating a diaper. Fit, absorbency, durability, cost, and workMOMship.
Fit: I tested both sizes of this diaper on my very skinny, long waisted son (who has NO rear-end whatsoever), and also on my chunky, short waisted niece who has a cushy-tushy. I was pleased with the fit of both sizes on both children. The Medium had more of a bikini fit on both children as they were towards the upper limit of the weight range, but both children had two snaps left, meaning that there was still room for growth. The Large also fit both children on the tighter snap settings, but there was a bit of sagging in the front of the diaper. Despite that, I was still satisfied with the fit. I would like to note that the children were several pounds under the lowest weight recommend for a sz Large. I contribute the sagging to this fact.
Absorbency: The absorbency of these diapers is outstanding. Of all the diapers my son has used, these are some of the most absorbent--I even used them overnight with an extra doubler and had no leaks.
Durability: These diapers held up exceptionally well to repeated washings and dryings. I never had any unraveling of stitches, pilling, or holes develop in the fabric.
Cost: Considering the construction of the diaper (hemp is a very expensive material) the price is very fair. A Medium diaper will cost $11 ($13 with doubler) and a Large will cost $12 ($14 with doubler).
WorkMOMship: Excellent. When I received the diapers in the mail, I examined them very carefully for flaws and saw none. The stitching was even and all were beautifully put together. Karen did an incredible job with my diapers.
