| mteaches's Full Review: Bellies and Buns Fitted Cloth Diapers |
Bellies and Buns are wonderful cloth diapers, and I have tried an extensive variety. Each one is hand sewn by a WAHM (work at home mom) just for your child. These are fitted diapers. That means that they are put on just like a disposable would be, but they need a cover. There is no waterproof barrier. Some people choose to go without a cover at home for short periods of time (in this case, I'd say up to an hour or so). This diaper is available in several sizes. Currently, at nearly 16 pounds, my daughter wears the medium. It is just fitting her, so there is plenty of room for growth.
I really like the design of my Bellies and Buns diapers. They are made of absorbent flannel. The outer part is made of a printed flannel that the customer chooses. The inner part (against baby's skin) is a thirsty white flannel. There are also several layers sew on the inside, between these two layers, for absorbency.
Right now, all Bellies and Buns diapers close with white Velcro. The hook side of the Velcro is on the ends of the wings of the diaper (the part that folds around to the front) and attaches to the loop side of the Velcro, which is sewn in one strip across the front of the diaper. There are tabs on the inside of the diaper to fold the Velcro onto during washing to prevent the diaper from sticking to other diapers in the washer/dryer. Some diapers have Velcro on the outer part of the wing to cross the wings over, thereby giving a snugger fit to smaller babies. The Bellies and Buns do not have this feature.
The hook side of the Velcro is not backed by any fabric. This is a big difference between the Bellies and Buns and all of the other WAHM diapers that I am personally familiar with. In other words, in other diapers, when the wings are fastened in the front, you only see fabric, which is covering the Velcro. In the Bellies and Buns, there is no fabric, so when it is fastened, you see the "raw" back of the hook Velcro. This is one feature of this diaper that I do not like. It does not affect the performance at all, but it is an aesthetic thing to me. Some others that have used this diaper tell me that not having the fabric prevents their babies from opening/unfastening the diaper themselves. My daughter doesn't try to do this (yet!), so I can't comment on whether this is the case for us or not.
Each Bellies and Buns diaper comes with a matching fleece liner. It is oblong, and fits perfectly inside the diaper. One side is flannel in the print of the outside of the diaper. The other side is a coordinating color fleece. Inside are several more layers of fabric to add absorbency. When using this liner, you put the fleece side toward baby's bottom, and this keeps baby's skin very dry.
I find the absorbency on these diapers to be excellent. My daughter can wear the daytime diaper easily for two hours without needing a change. After two hours, frequently the diaper is not soaked, and it could technically absorb more, but I change her anyway because it is better for her skin to be changed whenever wet.
The fit on these diapers is super. I never have a problem with the leg openings gaping, which is a problem in some other diapers. The waist fits snugly without the Velcro rubbing on the baby's tummy.
The sewing on this diaper is excellent. The diapers are turned and topstitched which creates a more "finished" look.
I would recommend Bellies and Buns to anyone looking to purchase cloth diapers.
