| iowamommy's Full Review: Bellies and Buns Fitted Cloth Diapers |
When I first became interested in using cloth diapers, I wanted to start with a very small sample of diapers to make sure I liked using cloth on my baby. At the urging of another Epinions member, DGTurtle2, I decided to choose Bellies and Buns diapers for my trial because she liked them so well.
I ordered two to start off with. Right away, I was very impressed by the customer service. These diapers are made by a WAHM (work at home mom) named Karen, and she is very quick to respond to inquiries and very helpful.
What are these diapers like?
Bellies and Buns diapers are made of flannel on the outside and the inside, with the absorbent part inside being comprised of part of a prefold diaper with several layers. The inner flannel is white, and the customer has a choice of what flannel print to use on the outside. There are cute prints to pick from, both girl and boy.
The diapers fasten by using Aplix, which is like Velcro but made to stand up to rigorous use. Karen uses fold-back tabs, so before washing you can close the rough part of the Aplix so it doesn’t catch on other diapers in the dryer.
It fastens just like a disposable diaper. No pins required! You do need to use a light diaper cover over the top to stop wetness from leaking onto the baby’s clothing.
There is a doubler, also, to add extra absorbency. This is a fleece-topped pad that you lay inside the diaper. The fleece will let the wetness pass through and then remains relatively dry or just barely damp next to baby’s bottom. With the small ones, they come with just a fleece liner instead of a multi-layered doubler, to reduce bulkiness.
The diapers are available in a daytime or nighttime version. The ones I tried are the daytime diapers.
The diapers are available in sizes newborn, small, medium, large and extra large, so all sizes and shapes of babies can be accommodated. She lists the waist sizes and rise on her website to help you in picking out the size, since going by the weight alone can sometimes be deceiving, depending on the baby’s build.
Our experience
The Bellies and Buns diapers have not disappointed me! I ordered three more after my trial run. For the amount of absorbency they have, they aren’t as bulky as you would think. One thing I like is that they aren’t thick on the sides of the diaper, and that helps them stay trimmer than some brands that have too much poofiness around the whole diaper.
The elastic has just the right amount of give to it. It doesn’t leave gaps around the legs or red marks from being too tight. Sometimes it is hard to find a diaper that fits just right around the legs, so I was very glad to find these.
After repeated washings, they have held up well. The Aplix has curled a bit on the corners of the tabs, but that doesn’t affect the holding power. The grip of the Aplix is very strong, and I’ve never had it let go.
The fleece-topped doublers are amazing. I highly recommend trying these. When changing my daughter, I am still so surprised that the fleece part can feel so dry when the diaper is soaking wet. I wish all my other diapers had this doubler.
With this much absorbency, they do take awhile to dry, but they are comparable to some other types of diapers.
Great price! These are very reasonably priced, ranging from $7.50 to $8.50 for the daytime diapers, and $8.00 to $9.50 for the nighttime diapers. When you consider that that includes the doubler, you’ll see that this is a very nice price.
Her turnaround time is also very reasonable. She is good to stay in contact with you to let you know how your order is coming along.
Recommendation
I highly recommend trying these diapers. The nice part about cloth diapers is that you can sell them at an online auction when your baby has outgrown them, and get part of your investment back.
