| pehr's Full Review: Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons |
I bought these clubs in 2001 when my game was still in its improvement phase. Several of my friends (and my golf coach) told me that they would dramatically improve my swing because they demand excellence. And right they were.
Bottom line, I love these clubs and would recommend them to anyone, even those who are just beginning to play golf. Here are the major reasons:
1. The look. Most Ben Hogan clubs have a classic look, and these are no exception. Just standing over the club gives me a confidence that my prior clubs (TaylorMade Burners) never did. As golf is mostly a head game anyway, this confidence is a real advantage.
2. The feel. When you hit a good shot with these clubs, the feeling is amazing. I've found that when my game is "on," these clubs are like extensions of my arms - I can shape the ball and control the distance and spin like never before. Similarly, when my game is "off," the clubs provide the right feedback - I can feel where the ball is hitting the club face and how to correct it. If you're willing to tolerate the bad play, this is a significant advantage to playing with many of the larger, cavity backed clubs.
3. The durability. I've had these clubs now for over 6 years and do not plan on buying any soon (as a point of comparison, I've had several drivers during that time). There are small scuff marks on the heads, but nothing that impacts playability, and the Ben Hogan shine is still there.
4. They're affordable. A quick search on eBay reveals that you can now buy these clubs for about $250. This compares to the $700 that you might pay for new clubs.
