There's nothing more annoying than being sick, but not sick enough to stay in bed. That's how I feel if I develop a cold with a runny nose and a sore throat. Headaches often go with the territory, too.
That's why we keep Benadryl tablets handy. One package of 24 will probably last us for six months, even if both my daughter and I have the same cold.
If I take one Benadryl tablet before bed, I'll have a good night's sleep, free of sniffles, throbbing throat and pounding head. While the tablet doesn't promise more than 8 hours of relief, symptoms will tend to subside during the night. Then I usually feel better in the morning.
If I still feel pain and sniffles, I'll take another tablet. Benadryl doesn't make me drowsy, and one tablet usually gets me to about 4 p.m.
Benadryl is a good all-purpose medicine to keep in your home all the time. When my daughter was 2 or 3, she sometimes had a hive-like reaction to a fertilizer in the grass at her child care center. A spoon of the children's formula made the red bumps vanish within an hour or so.
I've tried several tablet forms of Benadryl, and all are small and easy to swallow, leaving no aftertaste.
For me, the pain and symptom relief is so effective, I'd be careful not to take it for more than three days. Because any painful cold lasting longer than that should be checked out by your doctor instead of treated at home -- even with effective medicine like this!
Like most pain relievers, Benadryl will not cure your ailment, just mask the symptoms. But if your cold is one of those with a duration of 2 to 3 days that will clear up on it's own, you'll be very grateful that you had Benadryl to help you along so you can complete your daily activities without being miserable, sniffling and teary-eyed.
