Benadryl Allergy & Sinus Headache: An Unlikely Candidate for Ying-Yang Drug Consumption

Written: Oct 08 '06 (Updated Oct 09 '06)
Pros:The Gelcaps are Somewhat Effective
Cons:The overall side effects were Abundant & Prominent
The Bottom Line: Personally Recommend taking a drug that relieves the symptoms associated with the problem, not a Multi-purpose one.

Recently I had an allergic reaction to some materials I came in contact with at work. I was called out to a job site where we conducted a Condo Survey, which includes measuring up the Livable space for taxation purposes & property ownership. I must have come in contact with fiberglass insulation, which later that night would prove to be a frightening experience.

Around 8:00PM that night my eyes started to swell shut, I could not breathe through my nostrils, and my throat began to tighten. I knew that it was time to visit the hospital, so I was given some steroid shots, along with some strong Antihistamine which subsided the swelling & eased my breathing.

The doctor told me that Benadryl Allergy/Sinus Headache would continue to control the swelling & ease the pain associated with the reaction. I cannot fully agree with the doctor as you will read later on in my recommendation. This particular product is distributed by Pfizer & manufactured by Warner-Lambert Personal Care.

By now most of you understand I’m a "Box Reader," I am not expecting you to read each item listed, however I do. Whenever I purchase anything I read everything I can about the product as a precaution of what effects it can have on my body.

Allergies.com provided the following information on Antihistamine

Antihistamine Information

Antihistamine, decongestant, and analgesic combinations are taken by mouth to relieve the sneezing, runny nose, sinus and nasal congestion (stuffy nose), fever, headache, and aches and pain of colds, influenza, and hay fever. These combinations do not contain any ingredient to relieve coughs.

Antihistamines are used to relieve or prevent the symptoms of hay fever and other types of allergy. They may also help relieve some symptoms of the common cold, such as sneezing and runny nose. They work by preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced by the body.

My Recommendation

Although the Benadryl Allergy/Sinus worked to some extent I prefer a pill that targets specific symptoms rather than a cocktail. My belief is using this particular "drug cocktail" can have unwanted side effects, I experienced many of the warning symptoms described such as: sweating, dizziness, nausea, and drowsiness. If symptoms are caused by an allergic reaction, why would I treat side effects of that reaction (Headaches & Stuffy Noise), my experience with antihistamines has proven once I treated the allergy, the rest of the secondary symptoms subsided.

Basically, I would rather treat the problem of my allergic reactions, rather than the symptoms caused by the problem. It is my opinion that I experience more of these side effects because the symptoms did not actually need treatment. I personally prefer the Benadryl liquid gels that just contain an agent which controls the allergic reaction I am experiencing. I found that this Ying-Yang drug I am referring to has almost to many other ingredients crammed into to it, which can cause an over abundance of side effects.
