Histamine-A brief explanation
My body is full of 'histamine'. I know this because this what my doctor told me. Histamine is the stuff that makes you sneeze when being out in the windy spring. It also gives you a tickly throat in spring and fall, and can even make you lose your voice.
My body's reaction
For most people this is the most of their concerns. Unfortunately for me, my body chooses to react in a totally bizarre way. Instead of sneezing the histamine out, my body seems to just store it away. Into the under skin and cells goes the histamine that I come in contact with.
My first sign of histamine overload is an itchy, red, burning rash that appears where the histamine is the most concentrated. This is usually on my sides, belly, and legs. Apparently, histamine loves warm moist heat, because it tends to grow worse in the summer or when I sweated a lot.
What to do?
The doctor says I can not scratch this rash. No matter how much it itches, I must not touch it or it will spread much like poisen oak. Except it will not spread from my legs to my face per se, if I scratch my legs then face. Instead it will make a larger appearance on my legs as my body releases more histamine into my system. Doc says if I dont scratch it, it will clear up on it's own.
When I had health insurance, I would just go to the doc and get a script. The histamine would clear up and I would be no worse for the wear.
But now, with my lay off, I must find a cheaper alternative to stop the itching and clear up the histamine.
I tried everything. From cocoa butter to Tylenol Sinus, to Tylenol Flu. I even tried Benedryl liquid, Benedryl caplets and finally Benedryl Stop Itch Cream.
The first thing I noticed was the creme had a greasy feel to it. It felt much like shortening going on. But I didnt care because by this time I was sweating away at the factory and breaking out bump by bump more and more every night.
When I first applied the lotion, if I applied soon after showering, it stung going on. If I applied it with not fresh showering then it did not sting.
Whether or not I was fresh showered did not seem to matter with the effectiveness of this creme.
It lived up to it's claims that it stops the itch. In fact, it felt like it mildly numbed the area of the rash. Which was great for me. By applying this creme several times a night, I soon forgot I had a rash and the itching did diminsh.
Final Results
I found that by using Benedryl Stop Itch Creme, my histamine rash cleared up about 2-4 weeks sooner, than when I tried to just not scratch.
Also, the rash was less painful and definetly less itchy.
Although the creme is greasy going on, I did not notice any oily stains on my clothing or undergarments.
I found this product at Rite Aid for $5.99.
I give this product a 5 and now keep several tubes on hand for all my itchy skin needs.
