| Anne_Johnston's Full Review: Benadryl Itch-Stopping Treatment, Extra Strength |
This morning at 5 a.m., I drove my John Deere riding lawnmower out to the sprinkler pump to turn it on. But within minutes, my legs and rear end were covered with ants! Since I am such a sweet lady, they all wanted breakfast - and I was covered with bites.
Slapping, scratching, and rubbing I ran into the house to find some relief. First I grabbed the bottle of Alcohol and splashed that all over my legs and rubbed it into my skin - no relief. I wait several minutes but I was still itching bad and needed to try something different.
Next I used After Bite - The Itch Eraser made by the Tender Corporation. I dabbed that on all the ant bites and waited - no relief. I waited several minutes and by this time I am just above to "jump out of my skin" and looking everywhere for some itch relief.
I grabbed my pump bottle of Benadryl (Children's Formula), but for some reason the pump didn't want to work. Since the tube of Benadryl Extra Strength Itch Stopping Cream was right there, I smeared that all over my legs, thighs and rear. This cream says that it blocks the itch - but I did not receive 100% itch relief. After waiting for about five minutes and using the cream several times, I was still itching - not as bad as before the Benadryl, but still itching. Both the Children's Formula and the tube of Benadryl cream contain Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride and Zinc Acetate, so something in one of these ingredients is suppose to stop the itching. Benadryl stopped about 70% of the itch on my body, but I had to have more relief - I simply did not want to scratch my rear and thighs all day at work!
What medicine gave me 100% itch relief? Preparation H Hemorrhoidal Cream. I simply smeared it all over my legs, thighs and rear and immediately felt better. As an added bonus, I wasn't concerned if the cream got in "private places". The tube says that it gives prompt temporary relief from itching - and it did! Preparation H contains Petrolatum, Glycerin, Shark Liver Oil and Phenyledphrine HCI (I think the HCI must stand for the Hydrochloride just like Benadryl contains.) Maybe the Shark Liver Oil helped the HCI get into the pores of my skin better - I only know that Preparation H worked!
Preparation H has always been known to stop the burning and itching of hemorroids, but until this morning I never considered that it would work on bites!
Did plain old rubbing alcohol work for my bites? No. Did After Bite the Itch Eraser work for my bites? No. Did Benadryl Extra Strength Itch Stopping Cream work for my bites? Only about 70%. What really worked? Preparation H really worked for me You won't find me scratching all day at work - I found an anti-itch medicine that really works.
note- This afternoon while visiting my mother-in-law, the ant bite story was told. She (87 years old) said that when her kids were young and were bit by a wasp, bee, etc., she would always use Preparation H on them. The product always seemed to work best when the sting was really bad and really needed some "heavy duty" relief. Interesting to think that over 50 years has gone by, and here I found the same relief solution. Preparation H - try it for yourself!
