A great price/performer with central location and social interactions
This hotel has been updated but still supplies the experience of living in an 1800s heritage building. The lobby has a 20-foot ceiling with floor-to-ceiling windows. It is about 35 x 40 feet. With complimentary breakfast offered here every morning as well as a wine and cheese reception every evening, it is definitely a gathering place for visitors. An Internet terminal with good speed is supplied free. We found it generally available when we needed it. The staff use it during off-peak periods but will get off if you are waiting.
There are plenty of B&Bs in San Francisco but their rooms tend to be small and so are their lobbies. When meeting and chatting with other guests in the lobby, the Beresford Arms is their first choice and they have visited many times. The rooms are larger and so are the common areas.
Our room had a south-facing bay window (where all three bottom sash windows open) looking over the roof of an apartment building across the alley. The view was unobstructed although most of the landmarks are north and east. The bathroom is modern with a large 8-foot jacuzzi tub, gold faucets and a vanity with double sinks. New fixtures made the place seem like new. it had been renovated and there was a bar fridge. We could use it for our own purchases and only get charged for stock they had to replace on the honor system. TV reception was good with cable offering many choices. A VCR is included and they offer VHS tapes at the desk, with an index in the room. They also have hair dryers. An iron and board are in the room.
Breakfast was self-serve in the lobby with coffee, tea, fruit and muffins. Good large mugs made taking the coffee back to the room easy. A grocery store across the street provided necessities as well as wine, beer and liquor and an ATM. Plenty of restaurants are close by: Le Colonial (Vietnamese), Finos (Italian) and AR Roi (Thai). There is a custom sandwich shop in the next block, and a new tapas/jazz cafe at the next corner east (Anju).
The Muni bus passes right by heading east on Post, and the westbound bus is a block south on Geary. Four blocks northeast is Nob Hill, while four blocks east is Union Square. The northbound bus on Powell will take you to Washington Square (North Beach and the Coit Tower), Fisherman's Wharf, Cow Hollow shopping district and the Marina District. Fares have just increased to $1.25 each (exact change) but transfers are good for most destinations.
We purchased our hotel stay on the Internet for $102/night plus tax. When we checked in, they had assigned us a room that was a little small, but they cheerfully exchanged for a larger room at the same rate when we asked.
