| rkirki's Full Review: Bergad Isoform Mattress |
As someone who suffers from herniated discs, sleep apnea, and insomnia, a good night's rest is very important to me! Since my traditional spring mattress was becoming less than comfortable, I became open to doing some shopping.
My search began at Brookstone, where I tested a TEMPUR-Pedic mattress and was favorably impressed. When I balked at the high price tag, the salesperson suggested that I consider purchasing a Swedish Neck Pillow to acquaint myself with the benefits of viscoelastic foam comfort. While the total price of $146.81 (tax included) was steep, the prospect of waking up without neck pain made the cost tolerable. If you are considering a viscoelastic foam mattress, I would recommend starting with a pillow.
In the peace and quiet of home, I began to do research on these products via the Internet. That is how I discovered the whole landscape of lower-cost competitors such as Bergad.
Reading the reviews here on epinions.com made me feel comfortable to consider purchasing from Bergad. I selected their Full Isoform Mattress at $599 (plus $100 shipping). By comparison, TEMPUR-Pedic's Double Classic Swedish Mattress is priced at $1,199 (plus shipping). Beyond price, other factors in my purchase decision were density specifications which are similar to TEMPUR-Pedic (though slightly higher) and manufacture here in the U.S.
Delivery time from the time I placed the order was eight business days (Pennsylvania to Illinois). Although my order was confirmed immediately, I did not receive notification of shipment for several days. When I inquired via two e-mails, no reply was received. However, when I contacted Bergad's customer service number, I received a courteous return call the next business morning.
Shipping weight of the full-size Isoform product is just under 60 pounds, and as others have indicated, there is only one top-side which contains the three-inch viscoelastic layer.
I happen to use a mattress cover as well as a fitted cotton sheet, and lying impressions are outstanding. While some reviewers have described the density as "too firm," for me it is just right. Not only is the Isoform mattress comfortable when lying in the supine position, but most dramatically when lying on one's side, which is a recommended position for sleep apnea sufferers such as myself. The foam provides wonderfully consistent support to my pelvis and ribcage without the gaps inherent in a spring mattress. After my first night, I rested so comfortably that I accidentally neglected to hit the snooze button--I did not want to get out of bed!
Although I did not initially detect it when setting up the mattress, this new product emits a subtle odor which some might find unpleasant. The odor becomes more noticeable if one leaves the bedroom door closed. To hasten dispersal, some options are to remove all bedding and mattress coverings and/or open the windows.
There are two potential concerns that I intend to monitor over time. One is durability, in particular, degree of sagging. The other is responsiveness to temperature. I understand that cool conditions can make this type of mattress less responsive to body heat, and heat is critical to "molding" effects that make the mattress so comfortable.
One last word regarding temperature issues...On the TEMPUR-Pedic web site, customers are cautioned to minimize or avoid use of heated blankets, heating pads, and such products. I would assume this would apply to competitive viscoelastic foam products as well, and should be considered in one's purchase decision.
In sum, as a new owner of a Bergad Isoform mattress, I am extremely pleased with the product. It makes me look forward to bedtime.
