CUSTOMER SERVICE
I ordered this bed a week before Xmas and got it 10 days later, just as I was told. John Wood was an incredibly knowledgeable salesman and followed through on everything he said.
When we received the mattress and box springs, one of the box springs was damaged. I called John and just wanted to tell him of the damage so that it wouldn't cancel out our 90-day trial warranty. The damage was done during shipping and was only rips in the cloth below the box springs. No big deal for me, but I had read on this site that the Bergad customer service was shady so I wanted to make sure I covered my bases. He immediately emailed me an updated invoice describing the damage and ensuring that the warranty was still in effect. Three days later, to my surprise, a new box spring showed up at the door. AMAZING!
There was also the issue of the leg pillows being out-of-stock due to supplier issues. I was worried that I'd never see them and my pregnant wife was looking forward to the leg pillows to relieve her back pain. I called a few times to check on the status and two weeks after my initial order was received, I got the box with leg pillows. John, everyone else, was always courteous and responsive.
PRODUCT
My wife and I were apprehensive because we couldn't test out the product, but we went to some mattress stores in the area and tested the Tempurpedic models. The foam experience is definitely different at first. My experience was that at first it felt very soft and mushy, but then I also felt like it was too firm. It was a scary purchase over the internet, but I had heard and read so many positive things that I had to pull the trigger. Plus, this bed was cheaper than any of the mid-range spring mattresses were seeing.
We received the mattress and let it air out a few days in a separate room. My wife is pregnant and that latex smell was a bit strong at first. One of the issues we had, and are still having after a month of having the bed, is the latex odor. It is only faint now compared to the initial odor. Sometimes when you turn over a pillow or something you get a whiff. I'm certain it will go away soon. We have the mattress on the floor as we wait for our new bedroom furniture and I think when we raise the mattress and box springs it will allow it to air out much better.
Let me give you a little background. My wife is smaller, about 5'2" and 110 pounds soaking wet. I'm 6'2" 230lbs. So we expected to have vastly different experiences on the bed. I thought I would sink into the bed about 5 inches and she thought she would feel like she was sleeping on a board. She has always been a solid sleeper with no issues. Me, on the other hand, have messed up shoulders and knees and am cursed with insomnia and endless bouts of tossing and turning as I try to get comfortable. I'm 35 years old, but have arthritis in my shoulders and knees and this causes me to put more stress on my lower back during the day, which makes for a horrible night of sleep when my muscles finally relax and allow my aches and pains to awaken. All this being said, when all is said and done we both have had the same amazing sleeping experience.
It takes about three days to get used to the bed, but let me tell you when your body gets used to how sleeping is supposed to be and detoxifies itself of those spring mattress expectations you will experience deep sleep like you've never known. I am the biggest cynic in the world. One of the main reasons I was interested in this bed is that a King was around $1,000, about $500 less than any middle-of-the-road spring mattress we were considering. This mattress is worth twice what we paid and I would even say that if Bergad weren't around, the ridiculously high prices of the Tempurpedic would be worth it.
I have slept in the bed for one month now and except for the first three days I have not moved one inch throughout the entire night. Not one! We have two cats that love to sleep on ME and only ME. Not sure why. Anyway, when they used to sleep on me it would drive me nuts because I could never get comfortable. I have not noticed them once in the last month. I'm still amazed as I'm writing this. I wake up more rested and pain free. No tight calves from having to support my back throughout the night. No arms half asleep from laying on the pressure points in my shoulders. No sore back.
There is one thing I'm worried about which I haven't been able to confirm. I feel as though my side of the bed is becoming indented. There is a 10 year warranty on this from the company, but I'm not sure how they'd come to each person's house to verify this. Again, I'm not sure this is the case and maybe it's just in my head. I believe it's due to the fact that the bed conforms to your body shortly after you lay on it and when I move to the center to watch TV or something, it feels more firm. I haven't noticed any negative effects and there is absolutely no visual evidence of this at all. In fact, I've had my wife sleep on my side and she thinks I'm crazy. I probably am.
Although the bed is incredibly comfortable, one of the things we have thought about doing is getting a one or two inch topper from Bergad that is a bit less firm. If you've ever tested the Celebrity by Tempurpedic you will notice that is have an additional topper that's about an inch or so thick and it is less dense than the regular visco foam and a bit softer. I'm not sold on it, but my wife likes that mushy, soft feel. She doesn't need the support that I need because she's light-weight. But, a one inch, lower density topper shouldn't affect the firmness of the foam underneath and could provide an even greater experience. Isn't that so human of me? I've found perfection and am already trying to beat it.
Anyway, you can get toppers from Bergad in a less dense, more mushy and soft foam. I wouldn't use these on a spring bed because it's not thick or firm enough to counter the flawed support mechanism of the springs. I've seen these toppers in stores and was very intrigued, but I thought to myself, "How is a one inch piece of flimsy foam gonna support me enough to counter the springs underneath it." No sure if that logic holds, but it continues to sound right to me.
Sorry for the long review. I just believe this mattress to be the best thing around. I have never written a review before, except for those three-word ebay reviews. I felt so strongly about this and wanted to make sure the word got out. I've read it hear before and now am experiencing it...It's hard to sleep on spring mattresses anymore.
