I'm not exactly sure when my fishing obsession started, but I've been fishing for as long as i can remember. Pretty much the only real thing that my father had the time to take me to do with his busy schedule would be our weekend fishing trips. The two of us and sometimes my sister would go out to whatever river or lake we could find and try our luck. Generally we didn't catch anything where we went, but it wasn't always about the fishing or what we caught, it was more about the bonding moments.

Today, I still go fishing all the time and I go with my own son. Regardless of the fact that he is only a year and a half old, I want to install in him, the importance of bonding with your family, and give him the opportunity for the tradition to truly stick with him and hopefully with his children someday.

Generally when I go out with my son, I take him out to some of the calmer area lakes, such as Lake Clunie, Walden Lake, Green Lake, or any of the multitude of lakes that are located in the Anchorage area or in the valley. I know that with my son, it's not going to be the longest fishing trip ever, because he grows bored fairly fast. I do know however, that he enjoys the time he spends with me, and learns some things in the process.

The product
Powerbait by Berkley for Trout is probably one of my favorite products for fishing. I generally stock at least 5 to 6 containers of it in my box at any given time, in a wide variety of colors. The product comes in 10 different colors, but generally you will only find 4-5 different colors at any given store.

The product comes in two different styles, one type is the nugget, which is what I'm reviewing and the other is the moldable dough. Realistically it doesn't matter which one you use, but the moldable dough is the better one for the money, because you get a lot more in the container for the same price. The nuggets however are substantially easier to use and work just as good.

The nuggets generally come in brighter colors, that are enhanced with glitter and some type of attractant. I'm not sure exactly what they are made out of, as that isn't disclosed, but it appears to be some type of a doughy mixture. Regardless of what it is, the product works and works great.

The product is 92% biodegradable so it is fairly safe for the environment.

How to use
The product is pretty much as simple as it gets, especially if you've ever gone fishing before. You basically just take it and throw it on a hook, mold it around the hook a bit, and you are good to go.

There are some tricks however that you can use to ensure that you are a little more successful using the power bait. A lot of people talk about using it alongside with lures, but I find this method to be overkill. I think the fish can tell that you are trying to hard and don't end up biting in the process. My friends have done it this way and I always end up catching my limit, but they generally only catch one or two, and it's generally not because of the bait.

What I normally do is probably the most simplistic of setups you could ever use for fishing, but it works and works great. I generally catch my limit and go big at the same time. I take two snelled fish hooks, spacing them the length of the snelled hook apart, and place a tiny sinker, dependent upon water movement on the top of each snelled line. I then take the powerbait and mold it around the hook. This is a very simple setup, definitely not the prettiest, but extremely effective. The fish aren't looking for something pretty, they are just looking for something to eat. So keep it simple and you'll be more apt to catch a fish than if you over complicate the process.

Product Success
With the powerbait, I have found that I can catch my limit of fish generally with 30 minutes to an hour, fishing from the shore. I sometimes use hip waders, but for the most part, I go out with my son, so we're limited to shore fishing only for his safety. I love using the bait, because of how fast I can get my limit. If I was out with my friends, then I would probably slow milk the fishing a bit, but with my son's short attention span, I have to rely on catching fish at regular intervals to keep him interested, so this works perfectly.

There are obviously times when you don't get any bites using the product, but for the most part if you are in an area that has fish, they will come to it. The trick is to stay with it, and rather than change locations all of the time, rely on the attractant in the bait to bring the fish to you.

Final thoughts
This is probably my favorite product overall. I have had far more success with trout using this than I have even with rooster tails, spinner baits, or anything else. If you are looking to catch more fish, then this is the way to go. Just make sure that you mix the colors up a bit, and you should have an easy time catching fish each and every time that you go out.
