rancid1993's Full Review: Bern Baker Helmet with Knit Liner
Ever since I suffered a concussion two years ago while snowboarding, it's seemed like a pretty obvious decision to wear a helmet while out on the slopes. However, since that day, I've been trying to find the right helmet/protective headwear. I've had some misses in comfort and protection, but finally think I've found the right one in the Bern Baker Helmet. One of the major problems I encountered with a past helmets is the inability to control how much air flowed through the helmet on cold days and the overall fit with the changes I'd have to make to keep my head warm. This helmet made its debut during the 2006 Winter Olympics, and has gained popularity since.
I had seen some skiers and snowboarders wearing Bern helmets at my local mountain before and liked how they looked, but it was feeling how light and comfortable they are is what really sold me on the product. Instead of dreading having to put on a chunky, heavy, bobble-headed helmet I actually look forward to strapping the Baker on. While snowboarding, there are times that I even forget that there's even a helmet on my head. That's how comfortable the Baker is. In fact, this helmet only weighs 17 ounces in total. The sleek look of the Baker reflects the weight characteristics. The helmet is naturally slightly larger than a beanie or hat, but not too much larger. The Baker model also has a small brim on the front, which seems somewhat pointless, but it keeps the snow from falling into the top vents of your goggles, which is nice.
The Bern Baker is available in a bunch of different configurations to satisfy almost everybody. In addition to the helmet coming in a magnitude of different colors such as classics like black and white and more flashy colors such as yellow, you have a choice of how much protection the helmet will provide. One option is a shell with "brock" foam, which is certified as a hard hat, and "EPS" foam, which meets all the requirements of a protective helmet. You can also get the Baker with a removable liner with headphones built right in. I bought the version without audio, so I don't know how the quality of that is.
The audio-less version of the helmet comes with a knit liner that is removable for warmer days. The liner of the Baker has always kept me very warm, and there are no vents anywhere on the helmet. This is especially nice on cold days, but can make for some very warm days when spring rolls around, even without the liner in.
Final Thoughts
The Bern Baker is a very lightweight, comfortable, low profile helmet that provides excellent protection. I knew that I needed the head protection, but dreaded wearing a helmet until this one was found. I highly recommend this helmet or any other Bern Helmet.
