| Darkmistress's Full Review: Best Western Inn & Suites |
Thanks to the fact that everyone we know has to have a cat and my husband is highly allergic, we ended up spending 9 days at the Best Western in the Montrose area of Akron. Just the fact we stayed that long should say something because this road is lined with hotels and there are more on the other side of the highway closer to retail and restaurants.
When we checked in, the desk staff discovered they had booked us into a room that hadn't been cleaned yet so they upgraded us for the same price. The guy at the desk laughed and said, you get plants. Actually, we got a fridge, a microwave, and a couch as well as plants. The room is spacious. Really spacious. We arrived with 3 large suitcases, a guitar and 4 carry ons after a year in Korea and we never felt that we were tripping over our stuff. The TV sits at the foot of the bed and there is an arch separating the bedroom from the sitting room. In the sitting room is a desk and a comfortable couch. (I know because I ended up on it suffering jet lag.) There's a jack for the Internet at the desk. If you didn't bring your own cord, just ask at the front desk. I didn't even have to finish asking. I got as far as There's a jack in the room for the Internet, but I don't have a- and the desk clerk was holding a cord out. I never had any trouble getting online like I did at the Comfort Inn in San Francisco.
The room also has all of the usual amenities. Coffee maker, ironing board, hair dryer, etc. Since we had an upgraded room, we also had a fridge and microwave. The fridge is about 2 and a half feet tall and tends to like to freeze stuff if you don't keep an eye on it. The microwave is pretty small, but you aren't going to be cooking a roast in it, are you? The only problem I had with it was that it took 2 hands to open.
Every morning until 9 there is a free breakfast. It's pretty standard for free breakfast. Danish, bagels, cereal, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, orange juice, cranberry juice, coffee. Served in sight of the front desk, it is almost entirely unattended. If something runs out, you'll have to head for the desk. However, the people at the desk will cheerfully comply. They actually went into the cupboard and got out something for me one day when I missed breakfast due to jet lag and woke up too famished to think straight.
This hotel also has a pool and hot tub. Oh boy, hot tub. The tub is very nice, but I think they service it on Friday so the water may be lukewarm on Friday evenings because they drain it. It's also murderously chlorinated. You might want to just skip the hot tub on Friday. Be careful about brushing against the sides of the steps because you could come away with an ugly scrape. There's a couple of guys who stay here every Monday to Thursday and they use the hot tub in the evenings. They're really nice guys if you feel the desire to chat.
There's also a little gym. Treadmill, elliptical machine, reclining bike, a water cooler. The owner's teenage son appears to be the only one who ever uses it and he's only in there for a little while in the mid-afternoon.
You are supposed to get a paper every day, but that doesn't always happen. I'm sure if you really wanted to read the Akron Beacon Journal and it didn't appear at your door, you could get one at the desk.
Overall, I am thrilled with my stay at the Best Western Montrose. The environs were pleasant. The people were friendly. It's very close to a large shopping area with lots of restaurants, and, should you plan to be here during a blizzard, there's a reasonably close grocery store where you can stock up for the duration. This may be a regular home base when I come back to visit family since I don't think my in-laws will be getting rid of their cat.
