Pros: Three words: location, location, location. Amazing rates for mid-town/Times Square. Best Western service level.
Cons: Small rooms, desk staff not overly friendly (but it's NYC!), slow elevators.
The Bottom Line: Can't beat the price for the quality and the location.

| jrandalls's Full Review: Best Western President Hotel |
I've stayed in this hotel numerous times. It's not the perfect hotel, but for the price, you'll find it hard to beat. My last stay was a couple of years back...but we're going in Sept. 2003 and I'll write an update.
It's an older hotel that has been nicely renovated (about 2000). I'm not entirely sure that EVERY room has been renovated, so be sure to ask. The reno's are nicely done.
You couldn't ask for a finer mid-town location. I do NYC for the theatre (ah, Broadway), and the President is in the heart of it all. It's literally moments from the discount ticket booth. You can walk to everything from here--Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Lincoln Center, even Macy's. You'll want the subway for farther out reaches of Central Park (upper west, upper east) or Greenwich Village and the south end of the island. But no worries...the subway's just around the corner.
Cons to the place can be overlooked. It's one of the few hotels I know where the bigger the bed, the higher the price. My partner and I are happy in a double, and that saves usually $10.00/night over a queen. Rates vary wildly--I've paid as little as $89/night, and as much as $250/night FOR THE SAME ROOM. Often your rate will change from night to night, depending on what's happening in NYC, and whether it's weekend or week night. VERIFY before arriving, lest you be surprised.
Also, I once ended up in a smoking room (but it was a free upgrade to a suite, so who cares!), and it was pretty smelly...be sure to ask, and even call and confirm the importance of a non-smoking room for you.
The desk staff could be cheerier, but NYC is known for curt service. Don't expect them to go out of their way for you.
