It Really Is Round, A Unique Place to Stay!

Written: Feb 12 '08
Pros:Can't go wrong for the price to have a suite!
Cons:Not in a very good area.
The Bottom Line: A unique, economical hotel in Boston. Every room is a suite!

I have been training for a new job in Boston and instead of a three hour commute each way back and forth to CT I opted to take my job up on their offer to stay in town during training a few days a week. So I have made it me personal/quest adventure to stay at as many different hotels that I can and of course I’ll share my experiences with you! This is hotel three in my trek around Boston’s hotels!

My training is located in the Seaport district of South Boston, so I need hotels that are in that vicinity with easy access, especially during rush hour times! I took I-93S from the seaport district and was at the hotel in about 10 minutes.

Best Western Roundhouse Suites is located close to Boston Medical Center and the South End area of Boston. It is located on Massachusetts Avenue in the Roxbury section. (They don’t tell you that it is in the Roxbury area, but rather tell you it’s solely in Boston. Not being familiar with the area I didn’t realize that’s where it was located only to find out that area is not the best area to be in).

What’s unique about the Roundhouse Suites besides all rooms being suites is that the building itself is round (this feature attracted me to the building, because I wanted to see what it was all about). The building is over a 100 years old and it used to belong to the Roxbury gas company, they give you a history sheet when you check in. The main and only entrance brings you into a lobby area with some seating and the front desk.

My room was located on the first floor of the hotel. There are six floors to the hotel, there really aren’t any extravagant views being that one side of the hotel features a McDonald’s and two gas stations, while the other features a lumberyard and a funeral home.

On to the room itself. Being that the building is round the rooms don’t have concise angles like you would think, rather slanted in nature, but not round from the inside. When you first enter the room you are in the “living room” area. In this part of the room there is an armoire with TV and electronic safe, desk and chair, love seat (that has a pull out), side table, and coffee table. On the opposite wall is a counter area with a small sink, on the counter there is a microwave and coffee maker, under the counter is a small mini refrigerator. The room is separated from the sleeping area by a curtained French door and side window.

The bedroom area has a closet, an additional TV and armoire, king bed (there are different bed size options), two nightstands, alarm clock, and chair. In the bedroom and living room area there is a window.

The bathroom is accessed through the bedroom and has the standard accommodations, toilet, sink with counter, and bathtub/shower. The only thing I didn’t like about the shower was the showerhead, it was really low and small in nature.

The bed itself is pretty firm, yet comfortable and the pillows are soft and comforting to the head, there were only three pillows on the king size bed, I wish there were more. The bed was really comfortable. The décor was nice and not old looking or dated. The hotel itself opened in 2001 so I would expect things to still be in nice condition.

There are ice machines and soda machines on each floor. Check in is anytime after 3pm and check out is 11 am.

Other information: There is a courtesy shuttle that will travel within a mile of the hotel. It is recommended that you call the desk to request the shuttle times. 24 hours a day there is complimentary coffee/tea in the lobby area. In the morning there is a free continental breakfast featuring pastries such as bagels and muffins, fresh fruit, yogurt, juices, and cold cereal. Free Wi-Fi is available or you use the business center for free, however you need to obtain a key at the front desk to access this room. The hotel also offers a fitness center.

The rate for this hotel is about $102 a night prior to taxes. There is also complimentary parking, however spaces are limited to about six on the immediate property, but there is an overflow lot across the street for hotel guests.

I liked the capability of having a microwave on premises, and the amenities in the room itself. While I felt safe in the area, many people have told me that it is not the best part of Boston to be in. Also, morning traffic around the area is pretty dense, being that it is on a main road, near a lot of things.
