One thing's for sure, the Jeep CJ had its share of design flaws. One of which was the seat mount configuration. The two front seats sit on risers that tilt forward for access to the rear bench seat, but only the driver's seat is adjustable forward and backward. The seats themselves will have the tilt control in them - or not, if you choose racing seats.
Anyone who has ever driven or sat in a Jeep CJ knows how tight things can get when it comes to leg and head room - especially in a CJ5. This slider will allow a driver a bit more "beer gut" room with proximity to the steering wheel.
From the factory, my Jeep CJ7 only came with one of these sliders for the driver's seat. Since seating space is at a premium inside Jeep CJs and early Wranglers, both sides could use one of these puppies. In my case, my CJ7 was 24 years old when I purchased it, so I decided to buy two new sliders.
This slider get mounted between the seat and the seat riser and bolts right in for stock seats or seats with mount holes that match up. In the case of seats from other vehicles or seats that simply have a different mounting configuration, there are seat adapters available. But keep in mind, that the slider (itself) adds 2" of height and the use of an adapter might make headroom (especially for taller people) very cramped.
Some serious Jeepers fabricate roll cages with seat rails that allow this slider to be mounted to it so that the seats sit lower than factory seats.
The slider is basically two heavy duty drawer glides with ball bearings inside each side. When the front lever is pulled upward, it releases the catch inside both rails and allows the seat to roll forward or backward.
Originally Jeep decided to install one of these sliders for the driver only, I decided to install one for the passenger side for an added extra comfort. It's not necessary to buy both - only the driver's side but rear seat passengers thank me for the extra tiny bit of leg room.
Keep in mind that Rugged Ridge makes an identical product in case the Bestop version is sold out.
I gave this 4 stars because this same design has been around since the 1970s. I just wish someone would design a better version of this slider.
