Anyone who has owned an older off-road vehicle with a soft top on it, knows how much of a pain it is to snap and unsnap all the snaps - especially when it's cold outside. On occasion, the snaps can fail and the pieces can separate. Now you've got a top that flaps around and makes even more noise and worse - let's cold air in.
At this point, you really only have three options...
1) Buy a new top if the top is old, the windows are badly scratched and if the fabric has tears in it. This can be expensive.
2) Have it repaired at your local upholstery shop, but you have to lug it down there and leave the top there. This is not such a great idea if it's your only top and it's Winter time. You run the risk of someone scratching the clear plastic windows so best to leave them at home (if they zip out).
3) Fix it yourself. For most Jeep owners this is the best route. In fact, I used to carry this kit with me on the trails. Now that my new top doesn't use snaps I still keep it in the Jeep in case any of my fellowJeepers have "snap drama" out on the trails.
What Comes in the Kit:
male & female snap parts
a striker rod
a concave striker plate
instructions
Replacing a snap is fairly simple. After removing the top, lay it down on a flat surface - preferably on an old sheet or a couple blankets to deter scratching the windows.
Next, remove any remaining parts of the snap on either side of the problem snap. You can just replace the outer snap part, but I prefer to replace both sides to insure better snapping operation. The "male" side is simply screwed onto the Jeep's body while the "female" side is placed upside down on the supplied convex tool. Put the new backer plate into the fabric and onto the female cap. Finally, use the supplied striker rod (and your small ball peen or small hammer) and lightly tap the "rivet-like" part until it curls back on itself and locks into place. Voila!
You've just saved yourself time and money and in scary economic times, that's just a beautiful thing.
