Please Note: The picture above depicts the soft door jackets. The hard door jackets are taller to accommodate the larger hard doors.
I own a vintage Jeep CJ7 and after having spent some good hard earned cash on painting her, I purchased these zippered cases to protect my hard doors when I store them in the garage.
Topless Jeeps are the real "ultimate tanning machine" because (unlike the BMW) you can legally remove the doors and fold down the windshield. Next to a motorcycle, there's no other vehicle that can offer the same open air feeling with some steel surrounding you.
But when you remove the Jeep's hard doors storage becomes an issue. After I painted my Jeep, I was not going to subject the doors to mishaps in the garage. These heavy duty canvas and nylon bags were the perfect solution for me.
The bags are lightweight but offer great protection. I mean, if you drop the bag with the heavy door inside, you'll probably sustain a bit a damage, but if something was to fall on the bag or brush up against it, odds are great that nothing will happen to the door inside.
On the outside, the bags are constructed of heavy duty nylon material but only comes in black. The stitching is quite heavy as well. The inside is lined with a soft padded material that deters scuffing. The heavy duty zipper is the same type used on soft tops so they'll last a long time. If they should ever stick, simply use some beeswax and they'll glide easily again.
Also, the bags have heavy duty handles and an adjustable strap for moving the heavy door around. Can they be hung up off the floor with a door inside? I wouldn't take that chance - those doors are really heavy. I'm sure the heavy duty handles could withstand all that weight for a while, but after some time, they might break (or the hook might fail) and then you'd have door damage - which is what these bags are supposed to deter in the first place.
*As a side note, I use the commonly found black door edge molding all the way around the sides and bottom edges of my hard doors. Since there is protection on the bottom, I feel better about moving them around outside these protective bags.
The black material will, of course, attract dust and dirt but is easily cleaned with a hose and some soap if needed. Unfortunately, the bags are too large to machine wash, but in the grand scheme of things, who cares? As long as the doors stay clean and safe, they've done what they're designed to do. I swear by these bags. They're a must for anyone who has a newly painted or collectible vehicle.
Bestop also makes soft door bags that will also protect door sliders.
These bags are available at any off-road store like 4 Wheel Parts or online at Quadratec.com or eBay.
