Pros: Moist, delicious cake with simple instructions
Cons: price of this bulk box is rather high
I have a cake decorating hobby, and I decided to try Betty Crocker Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix when a friend asked for a carrot cake and I did not have time to experiment with scratch recipes. I was very skeptical of how a box mix carrot cake would turn out, but I was pleasantly surprised. From now on, I won’t even bother trying to find a scratch recipe for carrot cake; I will simply use Betty Crocker Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix and know that I will get a great result.
This review is for a case of 12 individual cake mix boxes. Each box will yield enough cake mix to make two 8 or 9 inch round cakes, one 13 by 9 cake, approximately 24 cupcakes, or one bundt cake. The mix contains (among other ingredients to be listed below) carrots, cinnamon and spices. When baking a cake using Betty Crocker Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix, the aroma that fills your kitchen is amazing. It smells like a spice candle and it just instantly puts me in a good mood. It’s nostalgic, like the smell of grandma’s house around the holidays.
What I like about this cake mix is that you can actually see the carrot pieces. This gives the impression that you shaved carrots by hand and slaved over your cake for hours. It also gives you recommendations for additional ingredients that you can add to make your cake that much more special. I usually add raisins and walnuts to my mix. They suggest those ingredients, as well as pineapple. I am sure you can customize your carrot cake many different ways to create a truly signature dessert.
I also like that the instructions, listed below, are very easy to follow and that only 3 ingredients other than the mix are truly necessary to bake a cake with this mix.
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Combine cake mix, 1 cup water, ½ cup vegetable oil and 3 eggs in a bowl.
3. Mix with a mixer for approximately 2 minutes.
4. Pour batter into pan(s) and bake until done (the recommended time varies based on type of pan).
Also provided are high altitude and cholesterol-free cake instructions.
Sugar, Enriched Flour Bleached (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and/or Cottonseed Oil, Leavening (Baking Soda, Monocalcium Phosphate, Aluminum Sulfate), Corn Syrup, Corn Starch, Propylene Glycol Mono and Diesters, Corn Cereal, Salt, Cinnamon, Spices, Mono and Diglycerides, Color (Yellow 6, Red 40 and Other Color Added), Wheat Starch, Carrot Powder, Nonfat Milk.
Carrot cake is most commonly served with a cream cheese frosting. You can make this from scratch rather easily, or you can buy a cream cheese frosting pre-made in the cake aisle at your supermarket. Betty Crocker makes a cream cheese frosting and recommends this as a complement to the carrot cake. Alternatively, you can serve the cake plain, or just with powdered sugar. Either way, you won’t be disappointed!
The price for this 12 pack of cake mix is listed at about $24 to $28 per case. That averages out to $2 or more per individual box, which is about the price of one box of Betty Crocker Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix at my local grocery store when it is not on sale. However, my store frequently has all Betty Crocker cake mixes on sale for $1. Therefore, it is way cheaper for me to wait for a sale and then stock up at $1 per box. In addition, I do not bake carrot cake very frequently (although I love it), so I would be concerned that I would not be able to use all 12 boxes before their expiration date.
I highly recommend Betty Crocker Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix if you want a moist, delicious cake that you can truly pass off as made from scratch. However, I do not recommend this particular bulk box, unless you plan on doing a significant amount of baking in a short period of time (or have the space to store all of the extra boxes of mix). I also suggest that you shop around for the best price, as the internet prices listed here are higher than what I can find at my local stores. Still, I recommend this product because the cake mix itself is excellent. As a consumer you should decide if the price and size of this bulk box works for you.
