| Shanna80's Full Review: Betty Crocker - Betty Crocker's Cooking Basics: Le... |
Okay, let me start out by saying that I have absolutely no cooking abilities whatsoever. I was born with a gene that prevents me from being able to make a frozen pizza without some sort of disaster (i.e. crust falling off in the oven, burning the pizza after it's only been in five minutes, and yes, even putting the pizza in the oven with the plastic wrapper on).
So, my boyfriend, realizing that I needed a little bit of help, bought me this book because I wanted to learn how to cook. (He is a cook at a restaurant, and I feel inadequate in the kitchen with him.)
Let me say that this book is amazing, and let me tell you why I feel this way.
IN THE BEGINNING:
The first chapter of this book is called - The Basics of Getting Started. And, it is basic.
It explains how to understand the recipe, common abbreviations for measurements, and even an equivalency chart (Just in case you don't have a measuring spoon marked tablespoon). It even goes into detail on how to measure ingredients properly.
Then, it has a page marked Essential Equipment and Tools. It gives the name, function, and it has pictures which are extremely helpful if you have items in your kitchen drawer that you can't identify.
The next few pages have descriptions and pictures of knives, pots, and pans, and how to use them properly. You get all this wonderful information before you even get to the recipes.
THE RECIPES:
Lets talk about the recipes. The recipes are broken down into five six chapters:
Beef and Pork Main Dishes
Poultry and Seafood Main Dishes
Pasta and Meatless Main Dishes
On the Side
Snacks and Desserts
These recipes are so easy to understand. They tell you how many servings, how long you have to cook it, and the essential equipment you need to make the food. And, the directions are very specific. (Very helpful to us that have NO COOKING ABILITY AT ALL)
This little book of miracles even includes a Thanksgiving Dinner menu that I don't think even I could mess up.
BEYOND THE BASICS:
The very last part of this book is called Beyond the Basics. This chapter goes into detail about common preparation techniques, basics for grilling, food safety tips, and tips for stocking the pantry. It has guides to herbs, spices, pastas, and salad greens. It has a guide to setting the table and serving the meal. It even has a glossary that contains over 50 words.
This cookbook is foolproof. I have used almost every recipe in this book, and I have to say that even I am impressed with myself. This book can help even people with bad cooking genes.
