I purchased the book Big Sarah's Little Boots back in 1994 while teaching first grade. I bought this book because the author, Paulette Bourgeois, is the same person who writes the Franklin books, and I am a big fan of them. While I enjoyed this story, when I taught first grade, it did not become a favorite of mine until I rediscovered it earlier this year and read it to my two children, ages 3 and 1. Watching the delight on their faces as they listen to the story is enough incentive to willingly indulge them in the countless readings they beg for.
Big Sarah's Little Boots is the story of a little girl who loves her rain boots, and splashing in big puddles. But, one day when Sarah tries on her boots, they don't fit her. Sarah is convinced, until her mother shows her otherwise, that her boots have shrunk. Sarah tries to make her boots bigger by doing a variety of things to them, but they still won't fit her feet. Off to the store she goes with her mother and younger brother to get a new pair of boots. Sarah doesn't like her new boots at first, but soon she is happy to pass on her old boots to her little brother and wear her new boots out to play.
After buying my children their first rain boots, I remembered this book and pulled it out and read it to them. My children love this book. They love looking at the pictures and listening to all the things that Sarah tries to make her boots bigger. This book is a favorite of theirs that they can listen to over and over again. They especially love to listen to the story with their rain boots on! My almost 2 year old daughter enjoys "reading" this book to herself too.
Our copy of this book is a paperback, with 25 pages in it. The text is simple, an entertaining story that holds the attention of even the youngest audience. The pictures in this story, clearly illustrate what is happening and are a pleasure to look at. The illustrations, by Brenda Clark, are delightful, simple, yet colorful and eye catching.
In my opinion, Big Sarah's Little Boots is a great story. My children love to hear this story and I love to read it to them, neither of us tire of hearing it over and over again. This book would make the perfect companion gift to any child's pair of rain boots. I hope you find it as enjoyable as we do. Now, I am off to go and read it to my children once again.
