| epicurean's Full Review: Big Wong |
On my first trip to New York's Chinatown , I asked a local bystander where I could find the best place to eat, and he quickly directed me to Big Wong's. When I first walked in, I was overwhelmed by the number of eager customers waiting for a seat. When the place gets crowded, they'll often seat you at the first empty seats available, even if it is at a table with another party already there…. Just join in, and make some friends. The staff quickly brings a glass of hot tea for each person, and the menus remain at the table. Sales tax is included, so all the menu prices are the prices you pay. Forks and spoons are readily available in dispensers at each table, and the staff will eagerly get you other items, such as ice water and chopsticks. The service is unusually quick, and you can regularly see the staff running out from the kitchen with piping hot food.
Notable items on the menu include #8 "teng jai jook", which is translated as "little boat congee" and includes squid, pork, and something else (probably beef). It goes well as a breakfast or lunch item. For dinner, they have many tasty dishes to choose from. If you dine as a group, I'd suggest ordering one noodle, one soup, one vegetable, and one rice dish to share. That way, you get a variety of the good stuff they have. Personally, I like Singapore chow mei fun which is a curry noodle with chicken, along with yang chow fried rice, wonton noodle soup, and "guylan" which is a chinese vegetable.
The decor is plain, but the focus of this place is on the food. Whole families dine here, so I assume the restaurant is kid friendly. They have booster seats. The prices are very reasonable, but expect to wait during peak hours. They close around 9pm, which is rather early for a Manhattan restaurant.
One more thing: they don't take credit cards ...just cash.
