A Curl's Best Friend..... Matrix Biolage Curl Defining Creme

Pros:it works.....
Cons:none
The Bottom Line: My curly headed self won't be without this.... you should try it too.

As noted in previous hair care reviews, I have a lot of very naturally curly hair. I spent years straightening it everyday, and I finally got tired of that so I decided to just live with what God gave me. Now that I let my curls go free, I am always ready to try new styling products. In years past you couldn’t find many products designed JUST for those with naturally curly hair. Thankfully hair care companies are finally getting with the program and coming out with products specifically for curly hair!

The Product

Biolage Curl Defining Creme is packaged in an 8 ounce bottle and it has a very convenient pump dispenser. The dispenser can be turned and locked (which is great when it comes time to throw it in a suitcase). The product itself is a white lotion that is pretty lightweight. It has a pleasant scent and is easy to work with.

What Biolage has to say about the product: "Curl Defining Creme is a lightweight, luxurious emulsion and defines, moisturizes and contours curls for perfect separation and frizz control. Botanical milks help condition hair so curls are soft to touch, shiny and healthy looking. Soft-feel stylers create natural texture and healthy shine while botanical milks of rice, bamboo and thistle add a dose of moisture for a touchable feel."

Here are the directions for use: ”Use on wet or dry hair. To style, work a few pumps in palms of hands, apply evenly from roots to ends. Style as usual. To finish, massage a small amount in fingertips and scrunch curls into finished shape.”

While this is a styling product, for me it will not take the place of any “control” type products, such as gel, mousse or pomade/wax. I wash my hair with shampoo and conditioner, and I wrap my hair in a towel for a few minutes to get rid of most of the dampness. I remove the towel and comb through my hair (I can only do this when it is wet!) I then apply the Curl Defining Creme to my hair. I use about a nickel size amount in my palm, rub it evenly all over my hands and then apply it throughout my hair, concentrating on the ends. I then apply a small amount of styling gel (these days my preference is Biolage Style Gelee). So while Curl Defining Creme helps control and define curls, it is not a gel or mousse type product. It doesn’t provide any type of stronger hold for your hair.

After I evenly distribute the product through my hair, I then I use a hairdryer with a diffuser to dry my hair. If you have curls, using a diffuser is the best way to go, or you can let your hair air-dry. In my case, I have found that my curls feel and look softer if I blow dry my hair.

My Experience

I have tried several of these type products for curly hair, including Redken Fresh Curls Spin Control. While I really liked that product, I am really liking this one from Biolage as well.

I like this product a lot because it leaves my hair soft and shiny, without being greasy or oily. My curls are defined, bouncy and completely frizz free for the duration. I live in the southeastern part of the country so humidity is a huge factor down here and that can be bad, bad news for curly hair. When I use this product, humidity isn't even a concern for me.

This product is very lightweight and doesn’t seem to weigh my hair down. I am always worried when I use more than one styling product that my hair will weigh down, and with curls going on, weight is not good! It controls the frizz and the volume, but it doesn’t leave my hair flat like you might think it would since it’s a leave in treatment with conditioning agents.

I usually wash my hair every other day, so on the "off" days, I like that this product doesn't buildup or make my hair feel icky. I also have a very sensitive scalp and this product hasn't caused any irritation.

Since it only takes a small amount of this product with each use, the 8 oz. bottle lasts me several months. As a matter of fact I don't usually buy more than 2 bottles in a year.

I can definitely tell a difference in the way my hair styles and looks since using this product, and the difference is good. I'm very happy with it.

If you have naturally curly hair or a perm, you would probably love this. It is a great product that is specifically designed to improve the look and feel of curly hair. It’s a styling product but it’s also a leave in “treatment” of sorts that is providing benefits to your hair at the same time that it’s helping your hair look good.

Purchasing Information

Biolage products are made by Redken, and can be found in salons, in Trade Secret or online. I did a google search for it and it came up on several sites including drugstore.com, ebay (but of course) and many other hair care product websites. The product retails for around $12. For more information you can visit www.biolage.com.

Thank you so much for reading! ;-)
