Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber
Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber is an aerosol product that blows dirt, grease, grit and every bit of foreign matter out of all the nooks and crannies of your guns.
I use Gun Scrubber almost as a "tuneup in a can" to clean the receivers of my Colt .45 Automatics and other autoloaders, rather than doing extensive detail stripping. All of the dirt, sludge, and unburned powder granules that can hinder smooth operation are blown completely out and the gun has an eating clean, almost sterilized surface.
It may sound dumb, but at least 50% of being thought a mechanical genius is being able to repair stuff that doesn't work right. It seems that mechanical stuff mystifies many people who seem to think it is little different than voodoo. I have found a vast amount of mechanical stuff like guns, locks, clocks, etc. are just impaired by dirt, hardened lube, and the like that do not allow it to operate as it should. Getting rid of that dirt and restoring fresh lubrication magically "fixes" the problem and you are a hero. Maintenance and repair of mechanical stuff should always include a little tender loving care and dirt removal before digging too far into the entrails and attempting major surgery.
Some of you may remember carbon tetrachloride, which was the degreaser of choice before it became outlawed. Gun Scrubber is about the same as that, but it is legal, far better than gasoline, kerosene, parts cleaner fluid, or other solvent. The aerosol gets it into the nooks and crannies and blows the crud right out.
The product is ideal for blowing out shotgun and rifle receivers with complicated repeating actions. 22 rifles get notoriously dirty due to powder blowback and this product just cleans it slick as a whistle.
Gun Scrubber dissolves plastic shotgun wadding that fills up your chokes and makes the unsightly dark streaks down the barrels of your shotguns. A blast dissolves the wadding and it pushes out with a single pass of your dry mop, the dissolved plastic looking about like ashes from burnt paper.
A couple caveats: the active ingredient is the very volatile trichloroethane which evaporates on contact, but is very noxious and must be used in a well ventilated area, preferably outdoors.
Secondly, the chemical may attack some plastics or stock finishes so I use it on the metal parts. I have tried it on Glocks which are polymer (plastic) framed handguns and they come out fine. Check it to be sure before you go spraying down your $10,000 hand made shotgun with the custom stock.
Thirdly, Gun Scrubber leaves the metal naked and unprotected so you need to restore lubrication and rust protection. I usually use Break Free CLP to thinly coat the surface of the gun and sparingly apply silicone grease on any metal to metal contact surfaces.
