Pros: No ads, all lovely photography
When I had a stay in the hospital in February a friend brought me 2 beautiful magazines she already had at home. They are called Birds & Blooms Extra. They were the ideal magazines to read and look at while in bed.
Birds & Blooms Extra is identical to the regular issues of Birds & Blooms magazines. This magazine has all of the features the regular Birds and Blooms have:Garden Chat, Birds & Blooms Poetry, Kindergarden, Reader's Scrapbook,On The Sunny Side, Glad You Asked and much more.
My favorite department in this issue is Glad You Asked. Readers write in with questions and gardening experts come up with appropriate answers.
They also have a Just For Kids story in a section of which I was very happy to see as a friend visited with her 5 year old grandchild. I was able to go through the entire magazine with him but the part he liked the best was Just For Kids.
He loved the short story about Nature's Notes by Judy Burris and Wayne and Christina Richards Page 61, May 2007 issue) where it told about how frogs and toads make croaking sounds. Timmy really loved to hear about how air fills up the male's sacs and then the frogs are able to croak to attract a mate. He also enjoyed helping a mother bird find her eggs. (Page 61 , May 2007 issue) pictured a large Maple tree with a nest of blue eggs on the right side of the tree.
Birds & Blooms Extra is a unique magazine without ads. It contains lovely and unique pictures of rural America at its very best.
The magazine came into existence in May of 2005. Readers apparently did not want to wait for their regular subscriptions of Birds and Blooms every other month. So, Reiman Publications launched this lovely idea of a magazine to come "inbetween months" so Birds & Blooms readers could get their hands on more expert tips and photography. Sort of like "an extra dose" of beauty.
Birds & Blooms Extra contains pictures of the most loveliest handmade birdhouses. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Hummingbird stories in both issues. The May 2007 issue had the story of "This Is Our Feeder" by Regina Hitchcock of Arizona. She tells the tale of a hummingbird named "Big Red" who ruled the roost. He literally chased other hummingbirds away from the feeder so he could get all the goodies. Regina tells how she was attacked one day by several hummingbirds who mistakenly thought she meant them harm when all she was doing was making sure they had enough to eat.
It is very interesting reading about nature stories and this magazine sure has them all. It really tops all other nature books or magazines.

PS) Oh I almost forgot to inform all readers. There is a country store at Reiman Publications online and a page on it usually comes in with a subscription about purchasing a binder for your pretty magazines. It is called Magazines Worth Reading. My friend actually has 3 of these binders. It keeps the issues in place and instead of placing these beautiful works-of-art into a magazine rack, you have them all together in this lovely neat binder. Check this out at reimanpublications.com. With a magazine subscription, you'll have the perfect gift for someone special also.
