Pros: tastes like Bisquick pancakes. less mess
Cons: doesn't keep once made.
I don't do much baking anymore, but tend to be a bake from scratch person. There are, however, products that do a good job if you want a head start. Bisquick has always been a reasonable shortcut for pancakes for those who don't want to mess around with the preparations necessary to make pancakes. The folks at Bisquick have recently taken the whole process one step easier and created even less clean up. They have come up with Bisquick Shake'n Pour Pancake mix. If you like the pancakes made from Bisquick mix in a box, you'll like these. They are just as tasty.
Bisquick Shake 'n Pour pancake mix comes in a plastic container that has the mix pre made and ready to go, all you have to do is add cold water to the fill-line, replace the lid and shake. The mix is then ready for use as pancake batter. I found there was far less clumping with this mix then I would have expected with cold water being poured on top of a starch product. I found that letting the mix sit for about 5 minutes after mixing gave me a better result - just like when I usually make Bisquick from the box.
Cooking time is the same with Bisquick Shake 'n Pour as with other pancake preparations. Just pour the mixture into your skillet onto your griddle and cook until the bubbles begin to break through the top on the first side, then flip and cook until golden brown on the other side. For me, a bottle of Bisquick Shake 'n Pour pancake mix makes about fifteen 4" pancakes. I found when I let a friend's child do the shaking and pouring, it was more like a dozen of that size. I suspect I get more because I'll scrape down the inside of the bottle. What can I say, your mileage may vary. Bisquick also offers shake and pour with other flavorings such as blueberry, but I prefer to have fruit or chocolate or other such ingredients fresh and to add them myself.
Bisquick Shake 'n Pour pancake mix taste just the same as any other product made by Bisquick. You get pancakes that taste the same as you would expect. required. Pancake mix does not keep well, so I find myself making the whole bottle and freezing the leftovers for reheating at a later date.
And for the record, my favorite pancake topping is either honeybutter or Nutella.
