These machines are great for spot cleaning and picking up wet messes.  But for real carpet cleaning you need two things:  Heat and suction.  The only way to get good heat and suction if from a professional carpte cleaner.

I have found that spraying on the detergent with a spay bottle and using the tank of the Wet Washer to rinse is most effective.

Also, it is not about scrubbing hard.  Gently brush the carpet fibers.  Rub it too much and you will ruin the carpet fibers.
For dog pee, get an enzyme action spot remover.  It used to be you only get it from a professional carpet cleaning store but most drug stores now carry something.

I've been through upright Hoover and Bissle machines and rented machines and they just don't cut it.
