Pros: Great power, affordable, bagless, 30 Foot Cord, lots of attachments, colour
Cons: Finding replacement parts, washing filters, can be hard to push
Our Dirt Devil Featherlite needed a replacement. My toddler pointed out that it really smelled when I used it and had nick-named the vacuum "Stinky". Lovely. Truth be told, one should not gag while vacuuming. We literally have four other vacuums but the Featherlite had outlasted them all.
I really wanted a bagless vacuum this time and The Dyson as fabulous as it is, was just cost-prohibitive at this time. We need something durable, reasonably priced and multi-functional.
I have never owned a Bissell but when I spotted the Powerforce Turbo 6596 Bagless at Walmart for 80CDN, I thought let's give it a try. I could not find another review for this vacuum, so I placed it here because it is a Powerforce Bagless.
Our vacuum is black and burgandy-a really sharp looking machine. Hubby even commented on the style and colour. Assembly was a snap with a simple screwdriver. Once it is put together, it is ready to go. And go it did. I was disgusted by the dirt, hair and crap this vacuum sucked up. With a busy household, a dog and a toddler I had been missing a lot with my former vacuum. With a simple lever, remove the dirt canister and dump it out. I can see bagless being a problem for others, especially someone with allergies as you must dump the canister and not lose the dirt into the air. This must be done carefully and preferably into its own bag or a tall garbage container. Mostly, I bring it outside to complete the task. I have to say, the room honestly smelt and looked cleaner.
Next on to the stairs and furniture. I used the turbobrush, which is just one of the attachments and is like mini- vacuum. It hooks on the hose(which by the way is long and flexible) and is ideal for upholstery and stairs. Once again to my chagrin, disgusting particulate.
Features include a another smaller brush and a crevice tool. I absolutely love the 30 Foot Cord. I love the easy on and off button near your foot. Also, the cord can be stored by winding it up and lies neatly on the vacuum's side. Headlight and a wide cleaning path with dual edge cleaning are also nice features. There are 5 height adjustments which are great as my home has both carpet and hardwood. The vacuum also features a small but useful Hepa Media filter on the front. The dirt canister is emptied and must be washed. There are also inner filters which are on the bottom of the dirt canister which must be washed every few vacuums or so. Not too big of a deal as I wash and set to dry but this leaves the vacuum out of commission until then.
The biggest plus is the power. 12 Amps and great suction. It is almost too powerful around curtains and floor mats etc, as it almost sucks them right into the machine. This is where creative use of attachments and height adjustment comes in. For some reason, at times it is easier to pull the vacuum then push and I thought that the vacuum was possessed and was going to pull me with it. While this vacuum may appear ergonomic, I probably would not recommend this vacuum for someone elderly. Maybe this is where turbo comes in. It almost appears to be propelling itself. Anyways, I feel that the suction power as a whole is fantastic. I have been using the Powerforce Turbo for a few months now and have been pleased with it. It is also pretty quiet compared to other vacuums I have owned.
It requires a style 12 belt(have not had to replace), Hepa filter(found on Ebay) and there is a kit you can purchase to replace the inner filters. I called Bissell's customer service who were helpful and their website is very informative. I know where I can find replacement items now, just not at the store I purchased this vacuum at which is kind of silly.
My daughter has now nicknamed our new vacuum "Joe Dirt"(yes, after that hilarious movie) and there are no complaints of smells, just a clean house. For the price and features, I would recommend this vacuum.
Update-Sept 07 I love this vacuum, still working strong for us and I stand by my recommendation.
