I first heard of Ellroy from a friend of mine. He was reading a novel called American Tabloid. He recommended that I read his books, starting with the LA Quartet. I am not a fan of Crime novels, but I had absolutely nothing else to read, so I bought the Black Dahlia. It is by far the best book I ever read. For the first time in my life I was captivated by this book before I got to page two. The book's amazing language hits the reader's mind, soul and imagination with both the precision of a scalpel and the brute force of a Mack truck. There is nobody who writes like that anymore. This a an amazing look at the times when cops could do as they pleased. This book must be read by anyone with even a hint of interest in a good mystery. James Ellroy is great, and by the end of the Black Dahlia, you will be ravenously drooling for the next book, The Big Nowhere. Ellroy is one of America's greatest writers.
