After remodeling our kitchen last Fall, my poor old Mr Coffee machine that had provided good service for many years, at $14.99, just looked out of place. We had replaced all the appliances with stainless steel and a high end sink and faucet. I needed a nicer looking, sleek coffee maker.
My search began! I started looking at other stainless steel coffee makers at epinions.com of course, and much to my dismay when I would find one that was highly rated, it was made in China. The Cuisinart Grind and Brew was $150, had some nice features, but still it was made in China, by workers making pennies, and jobs that had left the USA. Little did I know that finding a well-made, good looking, coffee maker that was not made in a third world country was going to be a long search.
After some looking I came across this very handsome Bosch Porsche coffee maker. The price tag of $300 was a shocker, but the more I read about it, and the reviews on epinions and amazon, I just needed to find out where it was made. It was manufactured in Germany and rightly had all of the German technology in a very simple machine.
Now the decision was where to purchase it. I check around and the high price was at Neiman Marcus for $300 which is the suggested retail price. I decided that this was it.
It arrived in a few days, and I was so thrilled at how beautiful it was. You are probably thinking “what’s the big deal about a coffee maker”, well, this one was quality from top to bottom. After nearly six months, I still say every morning as I refill a cup of java “this is really quite some coffee maker”.
So what makes it so special? Shocking enough it has no timer, no clock, no grinder, it just makes coffee. What a great concept! But, it weighs NINE pounds, and that is one very sturdy appliance.
First of all, this is a beautiful appliance. It is made out of heavy brushed aluminum with a very dark navy trim. The trim part is plastic, but very sturdy. Although I was not sure about the trim color, versus black, it is so dark no one would notice.
Next, the cord retracts inside the base. This is great because you do not have that stilly cord tied up behind or draped on your counter. It is very functional.
It consists of three main parts. When you look at the picture the top left is the removable water tank. Just pick it up by the handle, stick it under the faucet, and fill it to the line for the amount of coffee you want. It will make eight cups. When that is done, just put it back on the side where it fits.
Secondly, there is a swing-out basket with a gold filter. There is no need to put any paper filters in it, and just rinsing out with cold water keeps it clean. Fill your filter with ground coffee and close the basket.
Finally, there is a thermal carafe. This is such fine quality that I have found coffee still hot after four hours. Although we drink it all in the morning, it will hold the heat very well.
In the morning just hop out of bed, push the selector switch for 2-4 cups or 5-8, put on your clothes, and the coffee is ready. They do not call it the Porsche for just any reason. It is so fast that there is no waiting for the pot to be done!
A couple of great safety features are: if you forgot to put the water in the water tank, and you get up and turn it on, it will shut off automatically. Also, the minute the coffee is finished, it shuts off. There is none of this “did I turn the coffee maker off” question that we have asked ourselves fifty miles down the road.
Yes, this is expensive, and it is worth every penny. It comes with a one year warranty, but I cannot imagine that we will not have it ten years from now. It looks beautiful in my new kitchen, and as I say every morning “this is really quite some coffee maker!”
I may not have a Porsche in my garage, but I love the one in my kitchen!
