More times than not our day-to-day household chores seem like monotonous tasks that keep us from enjoying life. However, if we delve deeper we can see that not only are some tasks not monotonous they also help us tap into that creative inner self. Some people may see the task of lawn care as a repetitive chore that is best suited for the neighborhood kids to perform. On the other hand there are those who have transformed this chore into a skill that is anything but monotonous. To these people a lawn is not just some patch of grass you cut on the weekends and let your dogs poop on the rest of the time. No, to the lawn beautician this patch of grass is a statement of style and should be taken care of with delicate hands. This style is achieved through mastering the levels of lawn cosmetology. These levels include watering, fertilizing, mowing and trimming/edging. No lawn is complete without the perfect edge. Without the perfect edge a lawn can look messy and unattractive. However, in the past to achieve this look you had to use a hand edger that took too long or an electric/gas edger that probably had line feeder issues. With the introduction of the Black & Decker 12 in. Automatic Feed Trimmer / Grass Hog GH400 a lawn beautician can get that perfect lawn edge in no time without the hassle of feeding the line.
Black & Decker 12 in. Automatic Feed Trimmer / Grass Hog GH400
A year and a half ago, my wife and I moved into our new house. I couldnt wait to roll up my sleeves and work in a yard that was mine. This excitement subsided soon after the first time I edged my lawn. I received a hand edger from a friend and after one use I knew I had to upgrade. On Christmas, my days of long hours hand edging came to end, my mother-in-law bought me the Black & Decker Grass Hog. My time to become a lawn beautician had begun.
Features
Automatic Feeder
As the edger uses line it continues to feed out more automatically. This feature separates this edger from all the others. No more bumping the bottom of the edger to feed the line; its automatic. Im not really sure how this feature works but I was a little hesitant at first. I thought after a little use it would stop working or wouldnt work from the start. So far I havent had any problems using the automatic feeder.
Cord Retainer
This feature keeps the extension cord from accidentally unplugging while using. The cord attaches to a hook like feature that keeps it intact during use. This is a very handy feature that puts an end to the annoying accidental unplugs during use.
Trimmer & Edger
The Grass Hog is a trimmer and edger in one. With a push of a button and a twist of the handle, you can go from edging your lawn to whacking some weeds. Edging the lawn is made simple with the use of the metal rest that is installed on the edger. This rest sits in between the grass and the concrete and keeps you from cutting away too much lawn. Thus giving you a clean and uniformed edge to your lawn. I switch over to the trimmer when I need to cut the grass around my tree that my mower wasnt able to reach.
My Experience
I have been using the Grass Hog for about six months and I am extremely happy with its performance. The edger is light enough (5 lbs.) where my arms dont feel tired after use but sturdy enough to get the job done. The only assembly required was installing the guard onto the edger, which took all of 5 min. The line was already installed for me and I havent had to replace it yet. I only wish this edger was cordless. Besides that its perfect. Unwinding and winding that extension cord is very annoying. For me the biggest plus about this edger is the automatic feeder. I zip around my lawn with not a care in the world if there is enough line being fed to the edger. For me the automatic feeder outweighs the hassle of having to deal with an extension cord. For those with large yards who are looking for a more mobile edger I would look for a gas powered or the new rechargeable battery operated edgers. If anyone is in the market for a new edger at a great price the Black & Decker 12 in. Automatic Feed Trimmer / Grass Hog GH400 is an excellent choice. My mother-in-law picked my edger up at the Black & Decker outlet we have here in town, a little cheaper than at Lowes or Home Depot.
