Pros: Auto line feed, relatively quiet, head rotates for edging.
Cons: Touchy trigger, edging can be awkward for shorter people.
The Bottom Line: This Black & Decker Grass Hog trimmer performs as advertised and at a very affordable price. A great choice for light to medium duty trimming and edging.

| drjohn111760's Full Review: Black & Decker 12" Automatic Feed Trimmer / Grass ... |
When my elderly gas-powered Weed Eater finally died, my wife suggested that I purchase an electric trimmer that she could handle (she does not like the weight or noise of a gas trimmer). I was reluctant at first because I dislike dragging along an electric cord. I gave in, however, and headed to Wal-Mart where I came across the Black & Decker 12 in. Auto Feed Trimmer - the "Grass Hog." I was attracted by its ergonomic design and balance, plus its auto feed feature.
I got it home, plugged it in and started trimming. I was very pleased to see that the auto line feed worked as advertised - no constant bumping of the head to feed more line. It handled my normal trimming chores as well as my old gas trimmer. I tried the edger feature which rotated the head around 180 degrees. It worked fairly well, but not as well as a blade edger. Still, I was not disappointed and, with a little practice, I was able to edge the sidewalk and driveway in a satisfactory manner. The only negative is that the trigger is a bit touchy. It takes some practice to control the speed of the trimmer. Little pressure is needed to get the trimmer to maximum speed. This was a minor issue to me and I adjusted to the trigger pretty quickly. My wife also likes the Grass Hog. She has no difficulty using it, although she thinks the edger feature is awkward.
I decided to try the Grass Hog on some tougher challenges behind my fence, namely some Kudzu vines we have fought for years. The old 16 in. gas-powered Weed Eater handled the Kudzu, although not without some sweat and determination on my part. The 12 in. Grass Hog simply could not handle the task of cutting the Kudzu vine. Lesson learned: Use the right tool for the job. The Grass Hog is great for trimming lawns and edging driveways. It is not meant for heavy brush cutting - leave that to the heavy duty gas models. For the money, it's a great trimmer.
