taoshaman's Full Review: Black & Decker DLX900 12-Cup Coffee Maker
I've been using wired telephone headsets for over 20 years, so it was natural that I'd move on to wireless when I upgraded my cell phone to a Bluetooth-enabled model a couple years ago. In that time I've tried a few different wireless headsets, but for the past year I've been using the Plantronics 510 model. I'm actually now shopping for a better headset, so I thought it might be useful to write a review from the point of view of someone who's really used the product, and has finally decided it's no longer worth using.
The incoming sound is quite good. There are "bluetooth crackles" every now and then, but I haven't found a headset yet that is completely quiet. The fit is fairly comfortable; it seems more "secure" on my ear than some tiny non-boom headsets.
The battery life is excellent and lives up to the manufacturer's statements. Chances are with normal use you might only have to charge this headset once or twice a week. Charging time seems about average to other similar devices.
The single button handling most functions is big enough and easy enough to be useful. The tiny power button, however, is actually painful to the fingertip. It works, but it takes some getting used to. I consider this a strange engineering flaw in an otherwise well-designed device.
However, there is one major flaw with his headset: the microphone. The output signal seems very weak, and there is no way to increase the microphone's gain. People on the other end constantly ask if I'm talking to them on a speakerphone, etc.; they can't hear me! The only people who can are those with phones that allow them to really crank up the volume on their end. Very annoying. Also, the mic can't handle any amount of wind or external noise. The slightest breeze causes the outgoing signal to completely breakup, again resulting in frustration on the other end of the call. Plantronics claims that the latest versions of the 510 are better "windproofed", but I haven't tried the latest model so I can't vouch for that. I can only tell you that if you get the original model, you'll have to make sure you're always indoors and always away from even the slightest source of noise.
